How to get an earlier driving test?

PoptartPoptart · 08/05/2023 06:22

My daughter has just booked her practical driving test on the official Gov website (she has already passed her theory).
The earliest date she could get is mid October.
I have heard about websites / apps that you can sign up to to get cancellations for earlier appointments. I think they charge something like £25.
Has anyone ever used one and can recommend?
I don’t want her to get ripped off.
Thanks.

Are you teaching her? Many driving instructors don’t like it when you have a test booked when you are not ready so if she has her own car it’s easier to go to test in her own car. My son did his test in his Dads car and passed at 17 years 5 months (August baby so last of his friends to start) some of his friends are still learning and they will be nearly 19 when they take their first test. I recommend doing practice with her in her own or family car it really helps and everything you need to know is in the .gov website.

@Losingweightissohard thanks.
Have you used this service personally?
Looking for recommendations as there are lots available but I’m just dubious and don’t want to pay for something that’s no good

Yes I have and some have used Testi but Testi doesn’t let you auto-book and by the time you have approved the test has gone .

With this one you set the dates you want them to book it for you automatically and then it just books it so it’s quicker and better imo.

We are using Testi at the moment but can't say I'm impressed: the latest reviews are awful. Still not got a new date. It's so bad at the moment

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/05/2023 07:10

We used Genie with good results. It let's you rebook with a quick reply.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 08/05/2023 07:15

I used Testi and it worked once but then not again for my second DC. I imagine as newer and better apps come into the market they out compete each other. Which one is better at one time may be different to 6 months or a year ago.
Wouldn't recommend testi

spurs4ever · 08/05/2023 07:19

We used Testi and Driving Test Now. The latter lets you autobook but that didn't always work. Testi was great, no problems at all but you have a to be quick when booking. Good luck x

Losingweightissohard · 08/05/2023 08:28

The best option to most is to be test ready asap and then you get a test cancellation within the 3 day period when people who are not ready have cancelled short notice so as they don’t lose their money lots of those come up. The priority is getting your daughter out in a car getting up-to test standard asap.

Losingweightissohard · 08/05/2023 08:30

Obviously you need your own car for the test to utilise this option as driving instructors will have a full diary and can’t manage to fit these short notice tests in.

DucksNewburyport · 08/05/2023 08:32

I had both Testi and Driving Test Now and Testi was the one that worked for me. However, you don't actually need an app, you can just keep checking the driving test page on the gov website. You need to be prepared to check it frequently though!

DucksNewburyport · 08/05/2023 08:34

Yes I agree with @Losingweightissohard - most of the cancellations are at short notice so it works best when your DD is test ready.

(I also agree with her username but that's another thread!)

Losingweightissohard · 08/05/2023 08:36

Monday morning 6 am on the Gov website is when they release all the tests.

whowhatwerewhy · 08/05/2023 08:45

Used test geni . Worked well as long as your instructor is available or your using your own car .

shazkevincarrotlover · 08/05/2023 09:39

I used the free version of Testi for my twinnies.
It worked well for us but I did refresh the page numerous times a day like a demon.
You just have to be quick on the draw but I always did like a challenge.
Original tests were booked 6 mths in advance, booked by instructor when starting lessons in July (Dont quote me on this but im sure he said they have access to prebook for thier learners) Ds got moved from Dec to Oct mths Dd brought forward to Nov.
This was July 22 though I'm not sure what the waiting times are like now.

MymateDave · 08/05/2023 09:42

I paid £17 and bought the driving test now app posted above. I took my 1st test in October last year and failed. I got another test via the app for 2 weeks later and passed. So it definitely does work. You just pop the times and dates you would like your test to be and it autobooks for you when 1 is available.

Thanks all so much for the replies, it’s really useful to hear all of your experiences.
