Why are seagulls such a pain?!

I actually think seagulls are the bane of most seaside resorts. We went to Llandudno in north Wales today, it's such a lovely place and been a favourite for many years. But today the seagulls were so awful, I saw countless people getting their food stolen from them to the point where instead of risking to eat our picnic on the front we ate it in the car! Some of the gulls are absolutely massive, I saw one steal a full ice cream from a toddler in her pram and I feel like it must have hurt, she was beside herself. They seemed worse than any other time I've been there.

Why do they do this? Do they not have enough food to eat? I know tourists must drop litter and food etc and I often think of seagulls like, eating some chips someone's dropped on the floor but when did it evolve to swooping in for people's sandwiches?! I can't imagine living somewhere seasidey with them there all the time 🙈

Being a long way inland, we don’t see many gulls. We get these trash turkeys instead. They will steal shopping out of your trolley.

I remember watching one, whilst I was pregnant, pecking at a pile of vomit. I nearly added to the pile!

Can’t stand seagulls, they stink, poo on you and that reeks, tear open rubbish bags, make noise day and night, attack. I grew up on the SE and most local people I knew didn’t like them either. flying rats.

Ducatifan · 08/05/2023 06:19

They should be culled. We live in the countryside and a neighbour feeds them. They are here every day around 6.30pm. Shrieking and dive bombing. We can’t sit in our garden and eat at the same time.

Unfortunately, human beings have managed to get rid of most of their natural food source.

But they've long been associated with humans, fishermen and gutters have long thrown the innards of fish to them. They associate us with food.

They're also thieves amongst one another, so translating that to humans wasn't a big step for the horrible buggers.

The only time I’ve ever been attacked by a gull was in Llandudno. Had just left an ice cream stall and my cornet got snatched.

Then a different day sat outside a chippy and they were all calm for a while then a huge one came and they started to get noisier and seemed to be working each other up then they started to swoop the tables, my son lost his fish.

I’m much more wary now. Wonder if Llandudno gulls are particularly more aggressive?

They get the daily trains in from Manchester and Liverpool to hassle the tourists.

YouJustDoYou · 08/05/2023 06:30

We live on the coast and though they're a pain sometimes, I love hearing them because to me it always reminds me of the seaside and freedom and not being trapped inland where I grew up.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were seagulls posting on MN, doing their own PR. 😂

Thugs!

This really made me laugh! Especially if they're as clever as so many people say they are. Even posting cute videos about themselves 😅

"Rats with wings", "need to be culled"?

The herring gull is on the UK Birds of Conservation Concern Red List, due to critically declining numbers. So is the kittiwake (which is also lusted as globally Vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN Red List). Fulmars, black-headed gulls, common gulls, greater and lesser black backed gulls are Amber listed, meaning there is moderate concern about their conservation status.

So people who wish gulls harm, just because the birds are exploiting a food source that humans have made available to them, need to give their nasty heads a wobble.

moggerhanger · 08/05/2023 09:03

*listed not lusted FFS.

@Plump82

Obviously a seagull was being territorial protective of their nest cause of baby seagulls there or just laid eggs,

Not rocket science to work out...

Did I say it would need rocket science to work it out. I know why they attacked but not something you like to experience when you're at your work in the city centre.

lollipoprainbow · 08/05/2023 09:25

We have them walking down the streets here bold as brass, they remind me of the penguin in Wallace and gromit!

Nofireworksneeded · 08/05/2023 09:54

I live in a tourist seaside town.

I get so cross at the amount of tourists that sit and feed them their fish and chips. Because the tourists think it's cute or funny.

The fuckers expect to be fed all year, and when they aren't, they come and grab it out of people's hands. My friend had an injury from a seagull beak last year.

And don't get me started about the seagulls who bang their beaks on one of the classroom doors of the school where I work. Our children can't take their snacks on the playground because of those CFs.

They're flying rats that need culling.

SallyWD · 08/05/2023 10:27

People who talk about culling species make me laugh. Usually it's because they're a slight inconvenience to humans. Humans should be culled! We're completely destroying the plant and messing up the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

ShamefulNameChange1 · 08/05/2023 10:32

You can’t cull an animal just because you find them annoying. If you don’t want your food stolen then be more vigilant if buying overpriced tourist tat in an area with lots of herring gulls. They’re breeding atm and from now until about end of July they’re absolutely vicious as getting food for their chicks/ using half their feeding time incubating eggs. After that they chill out a lot.

They really dislike direct eye contact so if you see one eyeing you up stare at it and it almost certainly won’t go for you. More difficult when there’s dozens of them obviously!

Gettingbysomehow · 08/05/2023 10:37

Gulls are not the problem, humans are with their mass of rubbish and food everywhere. We are also destroying their natural environment and habitat.
We should know better. Gulls are wild animals they don't know any better.
When I lived by the sea I had two tame seagull friends over 10 years, they live a long time. They recognised me and during the breeding season they brought their babies to visit me.
The neighbours would get attacked when they had chicks but I never did and the gulls kept other gulls away.
I missed them like mad when I moved house.

RoseBucket · 08/05/2023 10:38

We sat on the grassy patch behind the pier at Llandudno to eat chips and only survived because we had the dog, we were surrounded but there was no way she was sharing her sausage with them.

So edgy. Yeah, humans are dreadful and good for nothing, kill them all and let the seagulls rule.

DonnaGiovanna · 08/05/2023 10:49

No mystery about why they hang around seaside resorts - the sea is their natural feeding ground. The bad behaviour is man made and the consequence of littering and feeding them. They are noticeably bolder now than they were a few decades back.

I live near the sea and they can cause a nuisance if they nest on the roof - dive bombing you if they think you're too close to their babies. An ironmonger friend does brisk business selling protective cages for chimneys.

Nofireworksneeded · 08/05/2023 10:50

So they should be killed because your neighbour is an idiot?

And how would culling work? You could reduce the numbers but you can't rid the seaside of them.

It isn't right to decide they should all die because they like chips. And u say this a someone who visits Llandudno so knows. We also take 200 kids there every summer and have ice creams on the sea front 😂

So you're happy for the Government to kill you so your home can be knocked down and given back to nature?
