Which kindle should I buy?

Just that really, never had one before but like the idea of it … no idea what I should be looking for.

Any recommendations? Will the cheapest one do? The descriptions all make them sound the same!

New Paperwhite is good. Up to you on the gb. I find the kindle store on the kindle is very slow so it's easier to do it via amazon rather than the kindle.

You can download lots of free books which means trying genres that you wouldn't pick up as a book.

Battery is pretty good but better in airplane mode.

Get a cover from ebay, you don't need one and you don't need an expensive one!

Thank you, with regards memory, how many books roughly do they hold? I’m not a massive reader … maybe 2 or 3 books a month?

An ebook is 1-5meg each so depending on the gb you can have about 1-2000 on your kindle at any one time.
you can also store books in the cloud. 😊

battery life is great. I read so much quicker on the kindle than an actual book. You can change the font size to suit.
I have a paperwhite and the backlight helps with reading in the dark. Case was a few quid on ebay 😄

I have a paper white but the basic kindle now has a backlight so if that's what you want and don't read in the bath (the paper white is waterproof!) it would be fine.

You don't need to have all your books on your device. I have plenty of room but I just take books off to the cloud if I'm finished reading them. You can always re-download them

What is the cloud? Sorry to sound thick but I’m not tech savvy ☺️ is it the same cloud as what’s on my iPhone? Because that’s full 😂

I had the basic one for years but upgraded to Paperwhite the last time they had a sale (check camelcamelcamel for price drops). I do prefer Paperwhite as the screen is slightly bigger but, if budget is tight, the basic one is absolutely fine.

Definitely a paperwhite. I'm on my second If it broke tonight I'd buy another one first thing tomorrow

In this context you can think of "the cloud" as being data that's not stored locally to you, so not on your kindle, or not on your iPhone in your case. The cloud storage that your Kindle will use is owned by Amazon, so is a different storage area to the one that Apple own. A bit like spreading your money across different banks, rather than keeping it in your purse or under your mattress. So, even if your Apple cloud is full then you've still got space in your Amazon cloud available to you.

The books will basically be ready in your kindle account to download them again 🙂

AnOldCynic · 07/05/2023 21:39

I have a Kobo. I can download e-books from my library onto it so I'm not having to buy loads of books.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/05/2023 21:51

Do you just want it for reading books?

Reason I ask is that Kindle is great just for reading books, so if that's all you want it for it will do the job really well and paper white is the best reading experience.

The kindle fire is crap if you want a tablet for internet browsing or playing games. They are slow and memory fills up really quick.

If you want a multi functional tablet then I don't think you can beat an IPad , I like the iPad Mini as it's the same size as a kindle and can easily go in my handbag, I have the Amazon kindle app installed and I have a screen protector that's Matt and prevents glare. I read about 2 books a week so get through hundreds a year.

pinkberet · 07/05/2023 21:53

I bought the older paper white about 6 years ago. I'm yet to fill it and no matter how many times I drop it, it prevails!

Bumfluffs · 07/05/2023 22:17

I have a 10 year old kindle paper white. It still in great condition and works perfectly.

Qilin · 07/05/2023 22:24

I have had the original, a Paperwhite and now have an Oasis.

I do like my Oasis as it's comfortable to hold, even when laying down, and very light.

Paperwhite was great. Dh has my old one and dd has one too.

All seem to have decent battery and despite being a few years old now it still seems good.

We don't keep many books on the Kindle itself. They are stored in the cloud library and can be downloaded at a later date if I did want to re-read, but normally once read I just remove from the kindle store and send into the cloud.

We previously had a kindle Fire tablet which I won. Wasn't impressed with it as a tablet and it doesn't really work as a kindle e-reader properly. So wouldn't recommend that.

If you like audiobooks, the newer Paperwhites and some other kindle models can play Audible books to a Bluetooth speaker

Get a kindle fire tablet. It's more useful because you can do more than read books with it. Or download the kindle app on an existing tablet.
I have found the app better because it has page curl, which means turning the page is more realistic, whereas paperwhite etc, just slide sideways.

IloveJudgeJudy · 08/05/2023 10:33

Do not get a tablet as you won’t be able to read your books very well outside. I recommend the paperwhite one but I haven’t seen the basic backlit one.

I wouldn't recommend a Fire (or any other tablet) for reading very much.
They are much heavier than an e-reader so its not great for longer periods of time, or for when laying down for example. Also the screen isn't good for reading books, especially if in sunlight. Most of the time, if reading outside you wouldn't be able to see the screen well enough. It's also a harsher light on the screen so not so great for your eyes.

reluctantbrit · 08/05/2023 18:01

I love my kindle but the drawback is that it's not useable to help with borrowing books from the library.

Depending what you read, Kindle Unlimited may be useful for you but the books are limited to sell at Amazon only for ebooks.

Kobo also now has a borrowing system, their ereader is normally suitable for library borrowing.

Reading on a tablet has the disadvantage of the size and weight of a tablet plus the glaring screen when outside.

I got my Paperwhite 2nd hand at CEX for next to nothing. I think it must have been an unwanted gift. I use it all the time - love it - I am sure I read more because my eyes don't get so tired. The 99p daily bargains are addictive.
