Has anyone successfully reversed adult-onset gluten intolerance?

Hi everyone, I was wondering whether anyone has any positive stories about improving non-celiac gluten sensitivity? Because I really miss proper pasta!!

Background: I developed intolerance to gluten and some other foods over the past few years, while I've had long-running post viral fatigue (diagnosed as CFS/ME). Prior to that I had a pretty much cast iron stomach.

The cfs/me situation is finally on the improve, which seemed to coincide with a number of things, including recognising the gluten intolerance and cutting it out of my diet, stopping work completely (and therefore massively reducing stress levels), taking up meditation, improving my iron and vitamin d levels, increasing fermented foods and reducing sugar, and taking a few supplements. I don't know if one of those or a combination has made the difference to me getting better, or if it was just the passage of time.

But I'd really like to know whether there is a chance the gluten intolerance might improve as well, and if so what people have done that has helped with this? Any positive stories or tips would be great to hear!

Yes. High quality probiotics sorted it for me. But mine was specifically caused by a long period of antibiotics, so the link was pretty obvious. Bacteria metabolise gluten for you. In the absence of other problems, it could well be worth working really hard on improving gut flora. I see you're eating fermented food etc, so maybe you've already tried a couple of months of decent probiotics, in which case my experience probably doesn't help you at all!

By decent probiotics, I probably mean expensive, unfortunately! I tried quite a few, ranging from £20 to £50 ish, and they did nothing. The ones that worked were about £120 per month, and I needed two months to sort it. Eeeek.

Thank you so much for replying @OliverKitten , that is all really great to hear. I have been hoping that working on my gut flora might help so I'll continue looking into that and other probiotics. I'm really pleased you got yours all sorted!

Yes - entirely due to getting on top of my other gastro issues through (finally) finding a drug that worked then lockdown forcing a slower pace of life so everything could reset. But I still can't manage the very high gluten stuff like ramen.

Weirdly, we always notice that we can tolerate gluten much more when we aren’t stressed! Might be worth monitoring your own patterns in relation to stress too.

And yes stress is a huge factor i think @Nothingtoseehereagain you're right, i should try to do a bit more with that area. A slower pace of life to allow everything a good chance to rest, reset and self regulate sounds like a really good approach @Lovetotravel123 .

Yes I cut out lactose and soy and was then able to tolerate gluten better.
