Cheapest Nappy Bin?

BeefyWellington · 07/05/2023 07:07

Sorry, boring topic.

I need a nappy bin. Ideally one with a large capacity.

My husband objects due to them being "more expensive than a normal bin" as they need the special liners.

But we need one, so I am trying to find the most cost effective option out there. It will only be used for wet pull-ups, no poo (if that makes any difference!).

Any recommendations please mumsnetters?

Get a normal bin with a lid and empty frequently into black bin

nappy bins are gross 🤮 I don’t know why they stink worse than jyst putting nappies in the bin

Sirzy · 07/05/2023 07:11

Why do you need a special nappy bin and not just use the normal bin?

Letsplayvets · 07/05/2023 07:12

We used an Angelcare bin with regular bin bags. You just need one empty angelcare cassette to hold the bin bag into place.

We had. 2nd hand one and it was rubbish, glad I never bought one outright.

Nappy bags are cheap as chips, 100 for £1…. That’s the most cost effective thing!

Really? I thought the while point of them was they don't smell? Except a little bit when you put a new nappy in?

I will sound lazy but I am trying to avoid having to go out to the big bin frequently. 😣

My kids are potty trained but still both in pull-ups at night. I have never had a nappy bin before, but I want to give them somewhere to put their pull-ups. And ideally then I will only need to empty once a week. After many years of nappies/pull-ups I am so fed up with traipsing out to the bin all the time, and the kids are old enough to be able to put their own pull-ups into a bin.

But if nappy bins are a con then I guess I will have to suck it up for a bit longer. 😭

Normal bin, scented nappy bags, bin liner.... does the same job. I had a nappy bin for my first and it was more faff and stunk more. I
Didn't for the others.

Any home store or discount store will have buckets or bins with lids for putting nappies in overnight. In the day I would just take the nappy straight outside.

Because of the smell. Which I thought was a problem that nappy bins were designed specifically to solve. But from the replies here it would appear maybe not. 😂

If they're only in night time nappies.... Just get the kids to put them in the outside bin as part of their morning routine?

Mine used to put it by front door in a little bag and after getting dressed,he'd put it out in the bin.

DustyLee123 · 07/05/2023 07:19

I used to line a bin with several bags so I could just whip one out when full. It didn’t smell.

WaltzingWaters · 07/05/2023 07:20

Amazon does a thing where if you spend £20 on baby stuff you get a free one. So I did that. Used it once and now just find it easier and sooooo much cheaper using nappy bags. I couldn’t believe how expensive the refills are and the bin seemed to fill up so quickly, I’d spend a fortune on them if I used it!

Tinybrother · 07/05/2023 07:21

Nappies will smell if kept for a week, I don’t think you can get around that. Is the location of your outdoor bin really awkward/inconvenient such that you can only go to it once a week? I just put them by the front door and take them out when we go out, which is at least once a day.

Mumdiva99 · 07/05/2023 07:23

Nappy bins need emptying daily. Or it will smell. Just use nappy bags.

KateyCuckoo · 07/05/2023 07:25

I'm a childminder and just pop wet nappies in my kitchen bin which gets emptied each evening. Poos get bagged up and left just outside the back door and I walk them out to the wheelie bin at home time.

Feelingcrazy123 · 07/05/2023 07:29

Search amazon baby wish list I got a free one last month.not sure if that’s still on offer but worth a look x

GracePalmer33 · 07/05/2023 07:40

I have an angelcare bin and get generic/non branded refills for it on Amazon. They're not that expensive. It's so handy. I wasn't going to buy one and thought they were pointless but my sister gave me their old one and I'm really glad I have one. They're way better than a normal bin.

GracePalmer33 · 07/05/2023 07:43

It also keeps the smell in well so not sure why other peoples don't. I guess you could still put the extra smelly nappies into a nappy bag and then put into the nappy bin if you wanted to. I only empty mine every few days when it gets full.

BertieBotts · 07/05/2023 07:51

Use a normal bin. Nappy bins don't smell any less IME and just having a lid is enough to contain the smell of wee nappies, poo does need to go out every couple of days.

If you do want more odour containment look at kitchen bins designed to be anti-smell.

The entire point of nappy bins is to get parents to part money for the cartridges every month.

timesogin · 07/05/2023 08:07

Smaller the better I reckon. Out to the big bin as often as possible. Or your house gets that horrible lingering old wee smell!
Ours is a super cheap tiny one with a flip lid. Regular trips to the bin just as we go out anyway...
I hate it when we've been lazy and you can smell it 🤢
