Things to do one in Cumbria/Tebay area

Will have a car!

Me and DH had a cottage booked quite rurally in the Tebay area. DH is now being deployed 5 weeks early 🙄 so I either lose the money or go alone.

Not familiar with the area at all so looking for things to do for one please!

Well, first you need to go to the farm shop at M6 Tebay services. Penrith is quite nice, also Kendal not too far away.

spanieleyes · 06/05/2023 20:04

Ooo, go to Kennedy's chocolate shop in Orton!

thecatsthecats · 06/05/2023 20:12

It's not far to Keswick, which is lovely. Ullswater is also good for a day trip.

If you enjoy a spa, the Lodore Falls hotel is nice.

Wbeezer · 06/05/2023 20:13

Have a mooch round Booths in Penrith for lovely food.

Grin at thread title.

This is my neck of the woods - when are you visiting? Orton is lovely and has a farmers market on the 2nd Saturday of each month, I think Shap has one too.

Lowther Castle is popular for the playground but the gardens are lovely too. Acorn Bank has nice gardens/woodland too. If its wet there are cinemas at Rheged and Penrith.

Honestly it's a great location with easy access to Penrith, Kendal and the Lakes.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/05/2023 20:16

Yes, Booths cafe is great. Think they might still be doing breakfast bap and a hot drink for a fiver. An all day deal I think.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/05/2023 20:20

Penrith had a fab second hand book shop last time I was there.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2023 20:22

My sister likes in Penrith. It's lovely. And 10 minutes from Ullswater.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/05/2023 20:24

Booths cafe is nice. As is Chapter 12.

MrsToadster · 06/05/2023 21:04

Go to the Hawes Water Hotel for a spot of lunch and to admire the views. Only about 30min drive from Tebay area. Haweswater isn't busy like the other lakes in the LD.

Have a wander around Sedburgh - England's second hand book town. Pop into
Fairfield Mill while in Sedburgh for crafts and a coffee.

Haweswater Hotel | Lake District

An Art Deco Hotel at the heart of a stunning 100 square mile haven for wildlife in the Lake District.

Have a look at Quirky Workshops in Greystoke - they do all sorts of interesting day courses…

Richvanilla · 07/05/2023 10:36

Thanks all, some great suggestions! The quirky workshop is right up my street but nothing on whilst I'm there unfortunately.

A spa treatment of some kind is also a good shout! So will definitely look into those

Yes they sell the most amazing pies.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 07/05/2023 10:38

Can you not invite a friend to join you?

Richvanilla · 07/05/2023 11:41

Unfortunately it is next week so too short notice for anyone to get time off work/arrange childcare provision etc 😔

Center Parcs do day spa tickets, as does the Appleby Manor Hotel and North Lakes Hotel (Penrith). Enjoy!

Peakypolly · 07/05/2023 16:47

I'd recommend a visit to Rheged - about 15minute drive. Nice cafe,
interesting stuff to buy, often art displays and a massive screen that shows shortish films. Easy to park and close to a nice garden centre (and some alpaca farm?)

Walk. Climb a fell. Climb a mountain. Or do easy walks: St John's in the Vale, Latrigg, the standing stones, the Bowder Stone. Go to Watendlath & look at the countryside Walpole wrote about in the Rogue Herries novels. Go to the Keswick Museum - it's ace! And the Pencil Museum which is far more interesting than it sounds.

Get yourself a guide to walking Borrowdale. Or get the Wainwright guides for the area. Or go to Keswick - lovely market town, and get a guide to a low level walk. The Langstrath valley from Rosthwaite is easy walking and absolutely beautiful (well, all of Borrowdale is beautiful).

Go up to Carlisle and do a tour of the castle & hear about those pesky border Reivers.

There is so so so much to do up here.

TheCumbrian · 07/05/2023 17:11

Orton Chocolate Shop
Mooch around Reghed
Have a look and see what is on at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick or Brewery Arts centre in Kendal
Spa day at North Lakes Hotel or Appleby Manor
If you like gardening check out Larch Cottage Nurseries at Melkinthorpe
Take a steamer on ullswater
Go for a walk round Haweswater
Get chips at Shap Chippy
Tebay services (although it's owned by the same people as Reghed so you might find some duplication)
Go to Lowther Castle and see the ceramic daffodil display and look round the castle and gardens.
Brougham Castle (there's some arty stuff there too)

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 07/05/2023 17:12

Or go on the Settle to Carlisle railway - you go across the Ribblesdale viaduct into <spit> Yorkshire.

Or walk a bit of Hadrian's Wall.

So much to do. You can go to a spa anywhere. When in Cumbria, do things that you can only do in here.
