Berwick upon Tweed holiday

Hello all,

We are going to be stopping in Berwick upon Tweed in July. I am wondering, if anybody can suggest anything nice we could do?

Were going to be with our 11 month old baby.

Our plan is to head to Edinburgh for one day on the train.

We are going to be stopping on the Haven site, but on a hideaway basis as a base.

Thank you.

Paxton House https://paxtonhouse.co.uk/

Chain Honey https://www.chainbridgehoney.com/visitor-centre/

Lindisfarne https://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/

North Berwick Seabird centre (North Berwick is an entirely different place to Berwick but if you are going up into Scotland is not as far as Edinburgh). Eyemouth is also nice

Berwick itself is a bit tired looking but as previous posts have shown there are plenty of lovely places nearby

Inland to the Ingram Valley, lovely river and waterfall, and Cragside (NT property) nearby which is lovely.

Loads of beautiful beaches, ice cream parlours etc, there's a zoo near Morpeth. Absolutely loads to do but depends how much you want to travel about, Northumberland is huge!

Nice places in Berwick itself: Mule on Rogue cafe, Northern Edge Coffee shop, Cannons fish and chips, plus lots of cute new independent shops on West street and Bridge street recently.

I’d also recommend walking through coronation park down to the river, it’s a beautiful walk and very close to the Haven site.

The Guardian just selected Eyemouth as one of the best beaches in the UK. It is a nice beach, and a sweet town. Definitely a good seaside day out, but pretty much the whole Northumberland coastline is glorious. There are a couple of small beaches in BuT too. (Spittal and one by the golf course).

There is a lot to see in Northumberland, but it is also a very big county. Pp mentioned Kielder - about 1.5 hrs away!! Just check out distances before heading inland.

There is a fantastic fish and chip shop on the high street (Csstlegste perhaps? Opposite B&M), a few shops up from a good ice cream bar (Mr C's) on Marygate. There's a Mexican restaurant - Taco's- which was pretty good for the (low) price a couple of years ago, and truly awful a year ago. We've tried to go to Limoncello, Italian restaurant, a couple of times. The first time we waited 45 mins for our table, then left to get fish n chips. The second time (a year later) they lost our table booking.

Definitely checkout Lindisfarne - check the tide crossing times.

Craster to Dunstanburgh is a nice walk.
Seahouses has a lovely beach and some nice shops (the fishmonger Swallow Fish, is a Rock Stein Food Hero). Bamburgh is gorgeous, tiny, and the butcher is also a Rick Stein food hero.

Very happy to travel around to be honest for a good place to visit rather than walk around the same place all the time.

Thank you so much for your ideas so far.

Eyemouth is lovely, stayed there and will go back.

If your a marvel fan you need to pop up the coast to New Asgard (and even if your not tbh) St Abbs harbour and seabird center.

Coldingham bay beach is really lovely for a day out cafe, and toilet facilities and beautiful water an sands.

Mustardandchickensandwiches · 06/05/2023 18:26

Boat rides from eye mouth harbour are really good value and you can feed the seals.

slowquickstep · 06/05/2023 18:40

The Lowry Trail in Berwick is great. Eyemouth and Coldingham Bay are lovely. The whole of Northumbria is just fabulous. If you go to chain honey make sure you walk a bit further along to the Union bridge. Seahouses is lovely too.

Bamburgh, holy island, seahouses (trip to the farne islands), Alnwick, Alnwick castle, barter books, alnmouth is lovely. So many lovely places to visit around there!!

@Mustardandchickensandwiches are you reading my mind - love the fact you've mentioned toilets!

Haha 😂 I ALWAYS think about toilets 🤣

Cocklawburn beach, the holy Isle.

Reallyareyousure · 06/05/2023 21:55

Not sure why people have suggested Eyemouth. It's so run down. So many nicer places on Northumberland coast.

Because its a very friendly, quiet pretty little town with a lovely beach. And places only become 'run down' when people don't invest in them by visiting and spending.
