Car boot sale tips

Seasea2 · 06/05/2023 15:03

I'm selling at the car boot sale over the bank holiday. How much should I sell books for? I have some easy listening and meditation CD's, would CD's sell? Thanks.

50p for CD’s 50p-£1 for books

houseselling · 06/05/2023 16:27

Waste of time

Books and CDs are not massive sellers. Same with DVD's. As long as you are taking other stuff too, not just a load of CDs and books. You'd be lucky to make your pitch money back.

You won't get £1 for a book. Try 3 for a quid. CDs rarely sell for more than 50p each.

Waste of time

I’ve been considering it and have never done it before. Why do you think it’s a waste of time?

I just have some things I can’t bear to give away, they’re in such good condition (kids toys etc).

For others who have done them (sorry to hijack the thread) has anyone used a card reader? You can get one for £20 and I was wondering if it might be worth it.

Carsarelife · 06/05/2023 16:43

It's def not a waste of time but depends what you're selling. It needs to be half decent stuff. If you have crap then mix it with decent stuff, don't just take crap. I normally do about 4 per year. Also bank holiday weekends are normally quieter than ordinary weekends as I think some people go away etc. June and September, October are fab boot sale months.

Seasea2 · 06/05/2023 16:46

I might try and sell the CD's for 20p each.

Waste of time

Was for me too, I went recently with some good quality and condition bits of kids clothing, same for toys and kid equipment, some decent ladies clothing and books/bric a brac, made the princely sum of £4 after my pitch fee.
My advice would be go to an absolutely massive one, I think it's basically a numbers game so you have to have X amount of people looking to buy kids clothing, X amount of which want the gender/size you're selling etc. The less people through the gates the less chance of a sale.

Carsarelife · 06/05/2023 16:48

@Seasea2 if you're going to do that then you may aswell sell them on music magpie. Save yourself the hassle of a boot sale.

Decafflatteplease · 06/05/2023 16:53

I wouldn't bother we tried it once never again 😂

Had people trying to grab our stuff before we'd unloaded, it was cold, we spent more on food and drink from the van keeping us warm than we made and we just took the lot to a charity shop on the way home!

massivesalads · 06/05/2023 16:55

I do boot sales 1/2 times a year and normally make between £60-£100

CDs very rarely sell.
Books occasionally do but I wouldn't rely on a few book sales to make your money.

I find clothes sell well and home wear.

SootspriteSearcher · 06/05/2023 17:01

I wouldnt pay more than 50p a CD or book at a car boot.

But honestly unless you have other stuff to sell I wouldn't bother. It's a long day, dealers try and get in the car before you've even unloaded and people will haggle for everything (and occasionally steal stuff).

I would advice different sizes together and preferably on a rail for clothes.

Table for most of it. Boxes under for cds/books.

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/05/2023 17:01

Be prepared to sell for 99% less than you want to / think it's worth.

You're banking on people there even having cd players anymore. They're pretty worthless.

I did one, never again.

Thanks for this. I went on Music Magpie and will get more for the CD's.

Best thing that I ever saw sold at a booster was a homemade cake. She charged 50p a slice

coxesorangepippin · 06/05/2023 17:15

*booter

Not booster

dontblameme · 06/05/2023 17:15

To the person asking about card reader, try iZettle app, no reader needed, just phone to phone and you pay a few pence per pound in fees.

dontblameme · 06/05/2023 17:17

Sorry forgot its changed its name to Zettle. And can be card to phone 👍

The things that we have looked for at car boot sales (family with 3 school aged kids) include:

Sports kits (tennis/ badminton/ cricket/ rugby / netball) etc

Kitchen / homeware (lamps, kitchen scales and pans etc)

Furniture

Toys (Lego, Ninjago, Pokémon)

Audiobooks (especially for kids)
