Really silly question, but I don’t know!!

This is probably something everyone knows. Except me it seems.

So, I am moving from rented to my own house soon. Due to the people I’m buying from being a nightmare it has not all tied in nicely timewise and there will be an overlap between tenancy ending and us moving in, so the rented house will be empty for a couple of weeks, but still technically mine.
I’ve never had this, so what happens with Council tax/utilities etc?
Do I have to pay two lots of everything because I’m still technically still in tenancy in this place?
I know it’s only a couple of weeks but even so!

If I don’t need to, then what do I do? Ring everyone and explain?? I’ve never moved this way before!

I imagine you’ll have to pay everything until the end of your tenancy .. and from day 1 of your new house. So yes, probably paying things twice. Welcome to the real world 🤷‍♀️

No you don't.

Council tax yes but you'll maybe a discount for vacancy.

Utilities - gas/electric - you won't be using at the vacant place so while your name might be on the bills, the charges will be low

Internet you can cancel at the one you're not in.

Your landlord may also want/be able to let it again earlier so talk to them about it

Not sure if it has changed but when we had a month overlap between homes 20 years ago (Scotland) I remember having to take photos of the empty rooms of the flat to show it was no longer inhabited and was given a discount on council tax. It is worth a call to your local council to see if they allow at least a discount.

Having moved house very many times over the past 40 years rental ownership etc. Can confirm no council on the empty property.

Thankyou everyone, that’s good to know on the Council tax at least.
Hopefully everything else will be nominal.
I will let my Gas/Electric company know the date I’m moving I assume so they can start to switch me over, then give a reading on new house the day I go in and in old house the day tenancy ends, ditto water?

It had been timed so I moved on the day the tenancy ended, but people I’m buying from had other ideas……

When we owned a property that was empty we still had to pay Council Tax, we didn't even live in the UK, house was empty as it had been sold but contracts hadn't been exchanged but we had to pay full CT 😡

you will need to check with the council about the council tax, not all give exemptions for empty houses

Council tax on empty properties varies council by council. We had to pay full CT on both houses.
Ring them the day you are 100% are you are moving (ie after exchange) and see.
Gas and elec should only be standing charges plus a tiny usage maybe.
Internet can be cancelled.
Water they charged us 0 as there was no bed present (I told them there would be occasional usage for e.g. cleaning an flushing the liis when we were there, but not bothered.)
You will also need to insure both places.

See if the landlord can rent it earlier for you.
