A question about my rabbits..

I'm sure I could find the answer to this elsewhere but thought there might be knowledgeable people who could advise.

I have two rabbits, 6 years old, neutered buck and a doe. They're both healthy, happily bonded and are virtually inseparable!

I came home from work yesterday and noticed fur on the lawn but no sign of where it came from. I've come home today and there's more. I've checked them over and she has a narrow strip along her back where, in parts, she's almost bald and I've just seen him tugging at her fur really hard. He's clearly pulling it out

I've never noticed this before. Any ideas why this behaviour has just started? Thanks

I’m not sure if helpful or not, but our doe used to sometimes build a nest with her fur? So she would pull both her fur and the buck’s fur out. She was also spayed. But sounds like yours is the other way round so not sure if it could be linked to nest building or not?

Aw makes me miss my bunnies now! We always had a pair of buck and doe growing up. Eventually my mum caved and the last two were full time house bunnies! Hope you work out what’s up with your two!

Thanks.

And no, no nest building. Just him hopping about and dropping fur all over the place!

I'm not sure I could cope with them in the house full time 🤣 I wouldn't get any peace.

I don’t have any answers but DD’s two does used to share accommodation and got on very well. Recently the spayed one has been taking lumps of fur from the non-spayed one. This started when our new neighbours brought their just neutered buck back from the vets. It also coincided with DD’s doe beginning to grow her ruffle.

Our two get on most of the time until they don’t. We can’t figure out a pattern apart from it’s usually fur taken from underneath the hind leg.

Appreciate you may have all this covered but:

Have they had teeth checked recently?
Do they get enough hay (should be 90% of diet)
Have they got enough space?

I miss my two so much. Yours sound lovely and like they're having a very happy life other than this new hair pulling!

Thanks for the replies.

They've not come into contact with any other rabbits or other animals than they've been in contact with for years - a neighbourhood cat who likes to sit by the run and watch them and that's it. Teeth are fine, diet is appropriate- correct balance of hay:pellets:veg. Plenty of space that they have free flow access to and from.

They are having a happy life. I hope! They get lots of love and fuss, plenty of things to keep them occupied that get changed frequently for variety.

It's only been happening for the past 24 hours. If it carries on over the weekend, I'll contact the vet.
