Responsible way to get rid of old clothes?

I've had a clear out and have sorted out everything that's still OK to pass on, but I'm still left with a bag full of stuff that no one would want. Like nursery cloths where the paint won't come out or scruffy old shoes.

Is it OK to just put that kid of stuff in the bin or is there somewhere I can take it where the fabric/ fibers can be recycled?

Loads of clothes recycling banks dotted around and also at your local recycling centre. There's one at my kids school, the school makes money from it.

There are clothing recycling bins. You'll find them in many supermarket carparks or at your local recycling centres.

Can they go in there? That would be great but I thought that they were only for stuff charities could sell

No they can go in, at least here they can. They'll sort them and they can be recycled or sold as rags.

Check with your local council. Ours can be collected on the same day as curbside recycling. We just have to put it in a bag clearly labelled 'textiles' and they take it for recycling.

I am not sure about the shoes but most big charity shops will take old scruffy clothing, just clearly mark the bag "rags"

Mabelface · 05/05/2023 12:15

Charity shops give them to the "ragman" and get a bit of revenue that way.

Also , check first but I think H&M still take any cloth , sheets , towels, and clothing.
You get ( or did ) a £5 voucher to spend in store for three bags of cloth . All they ask is fir the materials to be dry and free of oil ( spots of food oil are fine just not covered in it or engine oil)

Clarks shoes collectshoes even in the scruffiest condition and they recycle them. They don't publicise it very much for some reason but all the staff know about the scheme.

Primark has a box in-store where you can recycle clothes in any condition. Not sure if it's in every store but Cardiff's definitely has.
