How expensive is Norway?

Planning a short summer holiday in late August. I hate hot weather so thought Norway? But I've heard things are very expensive there?

OP posts:

Well let's hope the op had a nice time. She was going last August.

Depends where you are. Norway is expensive to start with BUT prices rise alarmingly the further inland you go. All down to transport costs.

If you're worried about booking all the individual components then travel agents are still pretty good.
I used Flight Centre for my Canadian trip last summer and booked everything through them...flights, hotels, trains. It was a lot easier and also knew there was that extra protection if anything went wrong.
Trailfinders is another company that should be able to put something together for you

😂 I guess most of us didn't clock the year

Still interesting though. We're going in a few weeks. Does anyone know how much wine you're allowed to pack in your suitcase?
Also any restaurant recommendations for Stavanger?

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 12/06/2024 09:49

I booked flights to Norway this summer on a whim. Now I'm regretting it 😭
We usually do things cheaply with air bnb, food from supermarket a few times, eat out a few times, get trains and so on.
But it's really expensive.

snowsjoke · 12/06/2024 09:57

Strangely, so far, everything has been ok price wise (but we're not there yet!). We are flying into Copenhagen and driving out Norway via the ferry to Kristiansand (£120 with the car).

Cheap flights, car hire only £10 a day, air b n b accommodation for less than £100 a night. We intend to self cater for breakfast, pack sandwiches, fruit etc for lunch and then takeaways with the odd meal out for dinner. Hoping to stock up on soft drinks at the supermarket when we arrive.

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 12/06/2024 10:14

Car hire is really expensive. From Oslo, it's around £5-600 for 2 days

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 12/06/2024 10:15

Oh that's with dropping it off somewhere else

snowsjoke · 12/06/2024 11:59

We've hired the car in Denmark as we're doing a tour of the Scandi countries. It's cheaper to hire there and drive up to Oslo through Sweden or you can take a (long) car ferry from Denmark.

I've been about 9 times, yes it is dear but you can make it work.
Honestly don't focus on the expense just enjoy it. It's such a beautiful place.

@notacooldad please pass on any tips. At the moment I'm thinking of packing pasta and cereal bars in everyone's bags.

I'm thinking Oslo to Flam, boat to Bergen, then train back to Oslo. We have a couple of days in each place to enjoy.

My best tips would to book trains at least two weeks in advance. I would have a hotel breakfast and fill up. Buy food from supermarkets.
Do not get a taxi, they are hugely expensive and limit buying alcohol as it it is expensive. Buy it in duty free before you come over if you would like a I usually go by myself and haven't been for about 18 months but the tips should still stand

@HighQueenOfTheFarRealm We did something similar. Started in Oslo, got the train to Flam, then from there we went to Balestrand (by boat) and from there to Fjaerland (boat again). Then down to Bergen (boat) and flew home from Bergen.
I'd highly recommend flying in/out of different places, so you don't have to retrace your steps, and to do at least some of your travel by boat. Travelling through the fjords, and down the coast to Bergen, was a highlight.

Balestrand is a lovely small town right on the fjord, with plenty of walking opportunities, or just relaxing on the shore if the weather is nice. Fjaerland is a unique village with only c300 inhabitants, but about 20 bookshops - the Hay on Wye of Norway! It also has a glacier and the national glacier museum. It was a highlight of our trip - we spent 2 nights there.

Norway was a great country - we loved it. We were lucky with the weather, but it's beautiful in the cloud as well as the sun!

HighQueenOfTheFarRealm · 12/06/2024 19:32

@ReviewingTheSituation thanks for the info. I did want to book flights coming back from Bergen but it didn't work out and was way more expensive. I've now found car hire for a good deal so we're going to stick with that.
I'm going to plan out a road trip now with some air bnb stays so I'll check out
We love road trips and did think of driving to Norway but it's a bit too far for the amount of days we have available.
