If you have twins/triplets, how did the doctor/nurse/midwife tell you?

And did any of you have a hunch before the medical professionals told you?

I'm just curious as this is always such a significant moment in films etc.

Very very tired very early on, hcg riding fast!

sallydoodlecat · 05/05/2023 08:18

Found out at 13- week scan. The sonographer said in a very blasé "you know it's a twin pregnancy". She assumed we knew. We didn't. I sais "I'm sorry?" And then she said "it's twins". I swore and burst into tears. It was my first and last pregnancy so I had nothing to compare it to but I did get quite large quite quickly. And had bad morning sickness. It's a moment I'll never forget!!

After four years of trying for a baby and one miscarriage we had sort of given up … resigned ourselves to a different life without children.

Then I fell pregnant …. god knows how as unusually we’d barely seen each other that month with work and social commitments.

First scan at 12 weeks, no family
history of twins ….. couldn’t believe it, but both over the moon.

Our gorgeous girls are 22 now.

Twins are amazing 🥰

I was convinced I was having twins, I told my DP so before any scans. He was surprised because I am very rational and don't really go on "feelings" about things. On the day of the 1st scan he told me not to be disappointed as it wouldn't be twins.

We went into the scan, it was a private nuchal fold scan done by a consultant. Who said "I am detecting 2 heartbeats here... congratulations you are having twins!". I was not surprised at all, DP was pretty surprised!! 😀

Quisquam · 05/05/2023 08:33

Nobody needed to tell us. The first transvaginal scan at 6 weeks, we saw two jelly babies on the screen for ourselves!

Empra123 · 05/05/2023 08:33

I'd had an inkling already. It

Empra123 · 05/05/2023 08:36

Let's try again!
It was my second pregnancy and by the time I had the 12 week scan I was passed the "has she just put on a little weight or is she pregnant " stage.

And before anyone said anything to me I was lying there thinking "I can see two there"

That was 22 years ago now

Wotrewelookinat · 05/05/2023 08:59

I didn’t know I was pregnant when I had a heavy bleed that was like a previous miscarriage. Did a preg test which was positive. Went for early scan, was relieved enough to know there was 1 in there still going strong, but then there were two!! My husband was at home looking after our toddler. I phoned him and said “You know we’ve always wanted 3 children…?!”. Later found out they were ID girls. Those twins turned 18 this year 😍.

Wotrewelookinat · 05/05/2023 09:07

Lovely thread by the way! I’m feeling emotional atm as the girls are leaving for uni in September and it’s reminded me to remember how lucky we are to have had them at all due to fertility problems etc.

Advicerequest · 05/05/2023 09:20

I bled at week ten and was so sad. Thought I was miscarrying. I can see it now, trickling down my leg seventeen years one. I didn't know I had twins but I had noticed that my hormone readings j dictated a possible multiple birth (I'd had IVF so had these readings done)
I called the clinic for a scan the next morning. The ultrasound operator said "so there's the baby you can see it's heating heart.... and there's the other one."
I was ebulliant.

Wallabyone · 05/05/2023 09:20

What a lovely thread! I don't have twins, but these stories are so heartwarming to read ☺️

Advicerequest · 05/05/2023 09:26

As for finding out sex: at week 16 the song rapier asked me if I anted to know sex and I said yes so he told me one girl and one boy.
four weeks later another songraojer told me it was two girls.
then at the birth (Cesaerean) the registrar said, do you know what sexes you're having and I said yes.
And he said for the first one it's a boy ... ha ha no it's a girl.
i was flat out on the operating table, a single parent having twins, with my body opened up while the doctors rummaged around. I did not have the capacity to process this 'joke'

Louisa4987 · 05/05/2023 09:28

I went for 12 week scan and the sonographer assumed I already knew... she just casually started talking about measurements for "twin 1" I was like sorry what did you sayBlush
She said oh it's a twin pregnancy didn't you know... umm how would IShockShock
It made sense as I had felt absolutely dreadful since 6 weeks.
They're 2 now and still give me the shock of my life quite regularly!

mauveiscurious · 05/05/2023 09:30

Crazy hormonal anger from day one, week 4 realised I may be pregnant and then week 5 there was pain. They thought it was ectopic but at the scan spotted two sacks.

Opted for a normal birth (horrific) they are adults now

Blondey2023 · 05/05/2023 09:36

Best thread I've seen on here!

DoubleYolker · 05/05/2023 09:36

I had a large bleed at around 8w and went for a scan alone without telling my husband about the bleed or scan, just assuming I’d had another miscarriage.

This was a decade ago and I still remember the sonographers words to this day. “It’s a rather full gestation sac…. I can see 2 heartbeats….Let me just double check there’s not a 3rd….No just the 2”. I was so shocked. No twins in the family, no morning sickness.

LuckyC27 · 05/05/2023 09:40

I found out last week - pretty similar first 12 weeks as my daughters other than putting more weight on so had no idea. The sonographer told us pretty immediately and my husband and I just looked at each and said what probably a hundred times.

Twinningaround · 05/05/2023 09:40

This is such a lovely thread 😊

I found out I was carrying twins very early on, I’d had a lot of pain and had a scan to check I wasn’t having an ectopic pregnancy. It was during covid so I had to go in on my own, partner was in the car. When I laid down and they started the scan one lady said to the other one (who was writing notes in the room) oh just spilt the screen and measure them side by side! Was thinking the whole time did she just say what I think she did! When they’d checked everything the lady said congratulations you’re expecting twins! My heart was racing 😂 they gave me a scan photo (although just 2 small blobs at this point) to show my partner in the car. I have a great video of me handing over the photo and him saying “wait is that two” and then lots of what I’m sure was nervous laughter from him.

I fell pregnant accidentally while on the mini-Pill. I knew the relationship wasn't long-term, and my dad had very recently been diagnosed with a pretty awful genetic condition that I hadn't yet been tested for.

I was also living about 100 miles away from all of my family as I'd relocated with work.

I realised I had no choice but to have a termination. The sensible, level-headed decision, right? It would give me the chance to have genetic testing and to find a long-term relationship etc. I was 34.

I went to the termination clinic for the first appt and they do the scans differently - the screen isn't visible or shown to the patients, for obvious reasons. I was about 8 weeks pregnant - and the radiographer sort of blurted out, "oh - there's two heartbeats, it's twins". I completely broke down in tears - my grandad was a twin and it was all just too much. She sent me off to the toilet to have a proper sob while I did the usual urine STI tests.

After the scan, she asked if I wanted to see their counsellor and I sniffled yes. The counsellor was amazing.

I then went through to see the doctor who was supposed to be booking me in for the procedure, and all I can remember is that I kept asking her what foods I shouldn't be eating if I decided not to have a termination, and other pregnancy advice questions. She looked at me very hard and said - "do you want to have a think about this? I can call you later to book this in...."

I sat in the car outside and rang my mum. I said "do you fancy moving to XXX to be near me? I'm having twins...."

I puked all the way through the pregnancy. Went into labour at 32 weeks while I was in hospital for something else, and no one noticed until I was almost fully dilated! 😅

That was 13 years ago. I have the most beautiful son and daughter. I honestly feel sick to my stomach when I think they were very nearly not here. And yes, my mum, my stepdad and also my dad all moved to my city when I was pregnant! My dad passed away about 9 years ago now and because he was nearby, it meant I was able to look after him in his final years. Mum and stepdad love it here - and we're just about to all move in together as we're building a granny annexe!

Even 13 years on, it still feels so special to have twins ❤️

I'm really enjoying this whole thread, but this is just the most wonderful story - thank you for sharing it! ❤️

Baneofmyexistence · 05/05/2023 09:50

I did have a hunch before the scan but the sonographer moved the scanner all over quite quickly. I couldn’t really see a baby but could see the black sacs and though there was two and I remember looking at DH who had obviously spotted the same. Then she went back to one side and said ‘there’s one healthy baby’ and then moved over a bit and said ‘and there’s another healthy baby’. It was a but of a shock even though I’d thought before it might be twins and we had our 13 month old sat with us so we went a bit into panic stations! The twins are 5 now.

Mabelface · 05/05/2023 10:06

I just had a strong feeling that there was more than one in there. My midwife took me seriously and sent me for an early scan. We went in joking about the head count. The sonographer then told me that they weren't joking about doing a head count. I said so it is twins! She said nope, there are 3 in there. First triplet pregnancy detected at that hospital in 10 years.

They're now fully grown and independent adults with a wonderful relationship.

Holly60 · 05/05/2023 10:09

Ahh this is lovely! Loving hearing what sexes they turned out to be too 💕 💙

thedoofus · 05/05/2023 10:19

I might have something in my eye!! Love this.

We found out we were having twins on DD1's first birthday! It was a six week scan at the IVF clinic. I can't remember what anyone said, and DH was quite preoccupied looking after DD1. It wasn't a massive surprise - it had obviously been a very good IVF cycle and my HCG results and the way I was feeling (tired/sick) had all led us to be expecting it. It was fun telling everyone else though!

They turned out to be a boy and a girl and are 15 now. And DD1 mostly likes the story of how she spent her first birthday.

It is isn’t it, it’s actually making me a bit teary (which is v unusual!)

DemonicCaveMaggot · 05/05/2023 10:27

I had IVF in the states so a twin pregnancy was likely. The consultant was monitoring my hormone levels and they were going up and up and up so he said it was very likely I was having twins. When they did the ultrasound scan at 8 weeks we could see two heartbeats.

On hearing we were expecting two girls though DH exclaimed 'Two weddings, two college funds, two weddings!'. I pointed out they may elope which cheered him up. On the way home he realized that there would be four females in the house, me, the DC, and MagCat1. MagCat2 was male, but well under the paw of MagCat1 and DH said 'Well he won't be any help' and got depressed again.
