Walks in/near Thirsk

My Husband and I are staying in Thirsk for a couple of nights and would like to do some lovely walks. We've been to Fountains Abbey and Brimham Rocks a number of times but aside from those 2 we don't know the area well.

Many thanks!

Great views from Sutton Bank, and there’s a reasonable walk south towards the White Horse. If you want to walk further, you can go north along the Cleveland Way.

Agree with Sutton Bank, there's some lovely walks round there and parking/cafe at the Moors Centre. You often see gliders taking off if you head to the White Horse.

There's a nice walk from Rievaulx Abbey (English Heritage) to Helmsley (a pretty market town with castle (also EH) and walled garden), or Rievaulx Terraces (National Trust) have good views down to the Abbey. If you like history, there's also Byland Abbey (EH) not far off too.

Up the A19 there's Mount Grace Priory (EH/NT) and nice walks around Osmotherley including Cod Beck Reservoir.

Forgot to add that Castle Howard and Newby Hall both have lovely grounds/gardens you can walk round too.

Second the posts by @TranquilityofSolitude and @Nitwittishy The White Horse at Sutton is a lovely walk on a sunny day.

Himalayan gardens near Ripon
Percival hall near Pateley Bridge
Walk between Grassington and Burnsall
Great circular walk round Jervaulx Abbey
Richmond is nice to potter around

The White Horse walk on Sutton Bank is good.
From Mount Grace Priory (English Heritage) you can walk up to join the Cleveland Way at Osmotherly and do a circular route around Cod beck.
Easby Abbey (English Heritage) to Richmond is a lovely, easy circular route.
Aysgarth falls is a good walk too.
It's a lovely area with many footpaths to explore.

Park at Boltby Forest and walk over to High Paradise Farm for coffee, lunch, cakes etc. Only accessible by foot, cycle or on horseback. An easy walk but amazing food.

These all sound amazing thank you. We're NT members so liking the idea of Mount Grace Priory and incorporating a walk. Can you set straight off from there to do the Cleveland walk loop @Meceme

Yes you can. There's a stile in the car park that leads up a spur path towards Osmotherly (about a 20 minute walk, albeit straight uphill). It meets the Cleveland Way part way up. Your NT membership gives free access to the Priory, house and gardens (small but nice cafe, excellent coffee) you just need to pay £3 to park for the day.

Sounds perfect, thank you very much 😊

Are there any nice off road walks from Thirsk itself?
