Have you ever won a big prize? I never won more than 30 pounds and I dont know anyone who has won either.. do you know anyone? I always wondered what people feel when they have won a big prize and how do they spend their money..

I would like to buy a 4 bedroom house, 2 flats for the children and travelling to California to visit my SIL.

No major wins but I go through phases whether I play or not. I’d pay off the mortgage, do loads of home improvements, give up my job and study random subjects by distance learning just for the hell of it. I’d go away every school holiday. I’d like to help limited family members, I’d certainly make sure my daughter was sorted but I’d be reluctant to let everyone know. For a start I don’t want to be seen as Lord and Lady Bountiful but equally not as random cousins’ meal ticket.

My friend's parents won £250k. Enough to pay off their mortgage, reduce their hours, buy a static caravan, gift each adult child £10k, and take them all on a nice holiday. The parents would have been about 50 at the time, kids 18-27. Now early 60s and working more hours, not quite sure why, but it's not because they want to.

@TheFlis12345 Do you know how they chose their numbers?

I have never thought to ask them!

beguilingeyes · 20/09/2023 18:19

I've never got more than four numbers but I used to work with a guy whose sister won 2.9 million right back when it started. She bought him a house and a car.
I'd like to win enough to give my family some, but not enough to be crazy.
I'd buy a bigger house and travel a lot.

Luckydog7 · 20/09/2023 18:36

I've won 25/30 a few times over 20 years of weekly playing. A few 2/5 £ on scratch cards but thats it. I only play for the distant hope of winning a life changing amount.

If I won a large amount I would tell no one but oh. My little design business would suddenly start doing very very well, oh would retire and we would move into a larger but still relatively modest house. Personal tutor for ds who has SEN, set up both children for life. We aren't big spenders so wouldn't need to have big flashy lifestyles to give the game away.

If it was an absurd amount would have to rethink... how to give it to family.

Most I won is
£160 lottery
£10’s on postcode lottery

About 25yrs ago, house riund the corner from me won 1million on lottery
they had 3 kids so they all got 250k each
the youngest child was 18
they stayed in the same house !

Tzimi · 29/11/2023 06:31

I havn't won any big prizes recently, but I've won about £275 in small prizes over the last 5 months or so...

tokesqueen · 29/11/2023 07:54

£1000 on Premium Bonds plus lots of smaller prizes.
Our work lottery syndicate of 20 won £20k, so £1000 each.
Our local pharmacy won the lottery jackpot in the first year. The staff all retired and the pharmacist bought the business.

Stephisaur · 29/11/2023 09:37

My Uncle won a large sum many moons ago. It was either before I was born or when I was very young. I just remember my Mum telling me about it!

I've not won anything decent on the National Lottery, but I did win £1000 on the Postcode lottery once!

Iateallllllthepies · 29/11/2023 09:58

I got loads of numbers on the thunderball once. I really thought that it would be hundreds of thousands.

£300.

And the worst thing was, going to collect it, I slammed the door to hard and the old glass panels shattered.

Yup, £300 to fix.

So that was a pisstake.

beguilingeyes · 29/11/2023 10:43

£2.30 on the Euromillions this morning. It's not going to change my life...

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 29/11/2023 10:47

There is a AMA on here from someone that said they won about 12 million- no reason to think it is fake as all very mundane.

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/11/2023 10:50

I think that was fake because she simply put it all in her bank account and didn't invest it because she said she wasn't interested in investments!

AdoraBell · 29/11/2023 10:54

No big wins here. I would sit on it for a few months and clear debts before telling anyone, even DH. Then help the DC and local community. Not entirely sure how yet. Switch to purely organic food and employ a chef. I’m NC with my siblings due to abuse and ILs don’t need any help.

Regarding DC, pay off stepson’s mortgage, DD’s student loans and buy them both a house.

After all that I would travel, but I wouldn’t move house.

Roselilly36 · 29/11/2023 12:57

Never won more than £30, we do have lottery winners as neighbours though! Hoping some of their luck might rub off onto us, I doubt it though!
