I’ve been Googling Womens solo travel things. Like expeditions or weekend retreats.

Has anyone done anything like this? Obviously I love holidays my my husband and 3 kids… but just fantasising about a trip on my own.

I’ve turned 40 and feel like doing something for myself.

I’ve never gone on an organised trip like that (as being stuck with a load of people I didn’t know sounds like my kind of nightmare), but I take at least one holiday a year on my own. Usually European city breaks or I’ll go to the coast for walking and swimming. I’m off for 10 days of walking a Camino in Spain in September. It’s wonderful.

I’d love to do this. Is it with a group? Or solo? Have you pre booked accommodation or are you going to wing it?

I am about to go to Pembrokeshire for a week on my - recently widowed.

I feel mildly apprehensive about for no really good reason. It is just something I have not ever done. And I have booked in a cottage in a port village so that I am not in the middle of nowhere on my own - which is where I would really like to be, and would have booked when there were two of us.

I will put on my big girl pants and bash on!

RaceToTheMiddle · 04/05/2023 13:24

@Mischance i really hope you have a wonderful time :)
Pembrokeshire looks beautiful.

Its not something I’m nervous about. I guess I’m just fishing around for ideas!

I’ve been thinking properly today, we’ve done a few walking trips in the Peak District, Yorkshire etc..

I think I’d do something along these lines

OP if you like walking on your own I'm
sure you’d enjoy a solo walking holiday.

RaceToTheMiddle · 04/05/2023 13:28

Thanks. I definitely would. I think I may plan something like… book a hotel and then do a walk each day, including something like Scafell Pike. We have done quite a few mountain walks and I love this.

I am really enjoying reading all your stories.

Going abroad would be amazing but I don’t want to sacrifice family holiday money right now! As we didn’t do much last year due to a few expensive house related things.

I love a good solo trip. No one to talk to for days on end. I’m an extrovert but my goodness, sometimes I just need a break from people constantly asking me where something is.
We also go away with the kids solo (lots of different make ups)

ItsCalledAConversation · 04/05/2023 13:32

Ive travelled alone to Greece and Italy, meeting up with people once there.

Ive turned 40 too and am planning a 3 day walking trip on my own soon. I’d go to a yoga retreat alone. I’d love to do an all-inclusive alone!

RaceToTheMiddle · 04/05/2023 13:36

@ItsCalledAConversation perhaps it’s something to do with turning 40🤣

Im in the middle of watching Race across the world (bbc thing) and just immensely jealous of the contestants!!

Keep watching things like Ben Fogles new lives in the wild.

I am really happy with my life and we are lucky to live in a nice part of the country. I think it’s more the brain rest I feel I need!!

Of course. Lots of times. DH and I have an agreement about solo travel each year. I'm going on a walking holiday in Central Europe later this month. I can do a few days on my own, but for longer stretches I like to join a group thing.

Have a look at Gutsy Girls - they do women-only group adventure trips that look hella fun. I'm thinking of doing one next year.

Swishhh · 04/05/2023 14:02

I’d love to do an all-inclusive alone!
That is what I’m doing next week, my thinking is the buffet meals can last as long as I want them to. I can either have a quick main course or sit there for a while with a glass of wine if I am really enjoying it.
I also enjoy watching the shows in the evening and I don’t think there will be much difference if I’m sat on my own or not.
I would also cruise alone, my DH cruise a lot and already do lots of solo activities/sightseeing during the day so I definitely think one would work on my own.
I am already planning a trip next year around the time my DH goes skiing.

I've been on several trips alone, usually just 2 or 3 nights, all in the UK. Might consider going abroad in the future but happy with UK breaks for now. I have primary aged kids so difficult to get away for longer due to childcare.
I would never book anything designed for solo travellers to do something together, I go on these trips as I crave time where I can do as I please and don't need to speak to anyone!
I mostly go walking- am doing bits here and there of the SW coast path.

Mutabiliss · 04/05/2023 15:21

There is nothing better than a decent hotel room, good snacks, a bath and your favourite TV show, knowing there's something lovely to do tomorrow and you don't need to make anyone breakfast or find anyone's shoes. Bliss.

I go away for a city break once or twice a year OP - started after we had a child and I desperately needed a break. Highly recommended.

CurlewKate · 04/05/2023 15:27

We've been together nearly 40 years- we would have killed each other if we hadn't done this occasionally!

RaceToTheMiddle · 04/05/2023 15:27

@hazelnutlatte that sounds good.
I have a preschooler and (as of September) 2 High schoolers. So yes it’s difficult!

Yes absolutely! I take at least one solo trip a year. My husband does the same.

Spanielsarepainless · 05/05/2023 20:39

I went on my own with a group to Italy when I was 40. It was brilliant!

RaceToTheMiddle · 06/05/2023 08:51

@CurlewKate yes true. We do have hobbies that we do separately. And the gym. I couldn’t handle not having my own space

Yes, I went to Madrid for 3 nights on my own, could probably do a week but then would be keen to get back to DS12, feels like time is running out with him!

It was heaven. I wandered around and ate in the food markets, checked out a gallery and read my book in peace. I felt invisible and just was able to do whatever I wanted when I wanted. In a very happy civil partnership for 16 years.
