My DD is massively struggling she is awaiting help for v controlled eating that has been caused by body dysmorphia. She has consistently got A stars for all her course work and exams but she says she can’t revise, her mind cannot concentrate.
she is getting massive support from school but she feels she will let everyone down if she doesn’t achieve the top grades, she is having full on meltdowns. The school have said she doesn’t have to sit and can re take the year but she just doesn’t know which way to turn.

Has she been to the GP for beta blockers or similar?

Has she lost weight? How much is she eating?

If she's not eating enough her mental health will plummet and she won't be able to concentrate.

Defer taking them for a year. A-levels do not have to be taken at the end of your school life.

She has lost weight but she’s classed as borderline below bmi. She does eat but it’s v healthy and she is definitely not consuming enough calories, probably around 1000 a day if I had to guess .
she isn’t on any medication and she hates the idea of taking anything.
i do think she would be better re taking the more I think about it so she can get the help she needs for recovery but my DH doesn’t think so

It sounds like she might be developing an ED, you might find more support on the teens with an ED thread.

Any weight loss in teens is a concern and bmi is not a reliable indicator.

Has she seen a Dr?

Calzonepizza · 03/05/2023 23:15

after much backwards and forwards since March when she told me we have been referred to a dietitian and counselling

Are you sure that the controlled eating is caused by body dysmorphia and isn't a response to feeling out of control in other areas of her life therefore exerting control on her weight?

Calzonepizza · 03/05/2023 23:21

I don’t think so she has always been v negative about her appearance despite us saying the opposite and her receiving many compliments from people. I think it could be genetic my Mum was v similar despite being tiny
