Does anyone else have this phobia...?

I'll be the first to admit I'm an absolute weirdo, but ever since I can remember, I've had a phobia of buttons. As in buttons that you find on clothes. Even typing the word creeps me out! I have no idea why this is or how to get over it. There is actually a name for this phobia but can't remember it.

Does anyone else have this or any other weird phobias?

I find buttons unpleasant and avoid clothes with them on. Ive never liked them and even as a small child avoided button craft and button tins like the plague but I'm not phobic. Terrified of large four poster beds though! I can just about accept white or light wood ones say with floaty white curtains but the dark wood, towering ones with rich velvet make me almost pass out 😅

It's strawberries for me! Can't even pass them in shops, I shake and cry if i have to be anywhere near them. Everyone thinks its funny but its terrifying to me

PictureConsequences · 04/05/2023 13:38

My DD did, just when all baby girl clothes seemed to be decorated with bloody buttons... She's over it now.

It is called koumpounophobia.

I have it. On a bad day I can't even say the word. The b word that is.

I find wild ones particularly abhorrent. These are the ones that have become detached from their garment.

Also me. I can't pick them up. Can't say the word unless I am absolutely forced to, even if it's referring to something like 'push the off button". I wear jeans but no tops with buttons. Would never wear a shirt, for example. Never wear coats that button up.

Pretty certain one of the main reasons I married DH was because he never wears shirts unless he's going to a wedding or a funeral, only jumpers, sweatshirts & T-shirts. He doesn't have the phobia, though!

Also have the same problem with loose change. If I see random coins lying around I feel very queasy and I struggle to pick them up.

Wool. Shudders.

Peas for me and I can't even describe my 'phobia' because I'm not scared of them but they make me feel on edge/anxious. I can cook them for other people and serve them but I hate them being on my plate and no way would I eat them! I don't like the way they roll around. It's so odd I can't describe it the feeling.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 04/05/2023 17:23

@lurkingfromhome yes to the coins!

I do wonder where such repulsion and/or fear stems from...

My dd doesn't like buttons when they are used for eyes on things, like in Coraline, and she also has a phobia of holes which I think is connected.

I'm exactly the same. Really struggled to watch Coraline with my kids as I kept telling them it was so scary. Obviously when we all watched it the only one terrified was me 😁

Decorative buttons just look weird to me, I don’t know why - as if they’ve been plonked onto clothes for no good reason. Which probably sounds judgy but isn’t meant to.

OrangeBananaFish · 04/05/2023 21:40

I'm the same. Not a phobia, but really don't like them. Can't stand them. I don't mind if they have a purpose, but as soon as they fall off or become loose then I'd rather not wear the item again. Also not a fan of the ones that are not for their intended use like for decoration etc. MIL bought DS a top when he was about 1 or 2 that had a car on it and used them for wheels. He wore it once as I refused to wash it.

I'm also the same with small change. Like go to a shop and buy something for 4.95 and hand a fiver over. I can't take the change.

Also don't like the words or say the words. Which is why I haven't.

I was watching someone on TV once (can't remember who) and they were afraid of peas. The interviewer suggested it was something to do with weightlessness. A single pea weighs nothing just like a small coin and I think that's the reason for me.

I'm OK with holes, but I am scared of balloons. Kids parties were a nightmare for me. Luckily my DCs are too old for the village hall parties filled with balloons now.

Steve Jobs had a phobia of buttons. That’s why Apple developed all of its amazing products with no (or very few) buttons. If you watch a video of him speaking you’ll notice there were never any buttons on any of his clothes.

what about the buttons on a computer ?! Just joking of course....

Notaposhette · 04/05/2023 21:48

Not exactly a phobia but if I see someone dressed up in a costume say as a bear then I feel uncomfortable. Have had to hide this fear from dcs but am OK with Disney type ones. I think its the random ones where they're mascot and they come up and try to hug you or even just wave!! Might be because they don't speak and feels a bit eerie?

MissingMoominMamma · 04/05/2023 21:49

Belly buttons.

Even the words make me curl up.

Allodole · 04/05/2023 21:50

Snap, although my dp’s shirts do occasionally come out for meals. Which I’m ok with as long as the buttons aren’t a feature (unusual size, weird configuration, contrasting colour, etc.). I don’t think I’d be attracted to someone who was especially keen on clothing with them on in the first place.

I used to work with a slightly creepy colleague who habitually wore those T-shirts that have about four or five buttons and no collar - a particularly revolting format IMO- and I’m sure I’d have disliked him a lot less if he’d worn plain T-shirts.

I can't bear tin foil
Just the word makes me shudder and want to rip my skin off
It stems from being a child and my parents made a guy fawkes-they kept it in the bath
I was shit scared of it apparently
Years later I asked my father what they'd used to make it
'It's hair was straw,it's face was tin foil,it's clothes where what your mother found in the charity shop...'
Mystery solved

My dd has a phobia of clowns
she was staying at my parents and had fallen asleep on the sofa
She woke up to her grandad watching a programme about John Wayne gacy-thinking she was still asleep
She can't even say the word, let alone be anywhere near one

Clowns for me too and also, I think, because I read an article about John Wayne Gacy when I was a child. I can hardly bring myself to use the word, could never go to a circus, can't even look at a picture of one and lived in fear of encountering one at parties as a child including McDonald's parties which I wouldn't go to. Strangely, I'm not bothered by Pennywise in It, it's more traditional ones, they actually make me feel physically sick. I don't like ventriloquist dummies either but that's not as bad.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 05/05/2023 07:29

I hate clowns.
