Dp started a new job 3 mths ago with a v large firm in which he knew the CEO and partner very well from previous jobs. Dp was offered this job after reaching out to them as he was seeking a new opportunity. He was in a v senior job previously and when he reached out the boss of new place said he would be very keen to give him work. All great and Dp is delighted so far. Anyway it came to light at the end of last week that someone senior has left and the CEO happened to tell my DP that he was interviewing someone for the roll. Now this all sounds very normal but my Dp is feeling a bit meh as he would have absolutely jumped through hoops for an opportunity to apply for this job as it's what he previously did and was extremely good and well thought of in his field. Currently he's employed to do one particular job but is doing the workload of lots of other areas which he's a bit frustrated as the pay isn't reflected in the hours he's putting in if that make sense.

So I'm drifting on but what I'm asking is if you were in my Dp shoes would you be a bit Irked that you weren't given the chance to apply or how would you interpret it. He's feeling pretty shit all weekend about it

Did he tell the CEO he'd like an opportunity to interview for it? Is that not why they told him?

No the CEO said something like "hi mr x can't stop for a chat as I'm interviewing atm " something off the cuff like that

I feel sorry for him as he's a bit deflated but I need you guys to give me your thoughts

He could still have thrown his hat in the ring

That's what I've said but he's being al " if they had wanted me they would have said and it's not advertised "

But surely he had as much chance as anyone else to apply for the job, he just didn't look for the advert?

What conversations has he had previously with the CEO or whoever he reports to, about his ambitions? From what you say, he got his present role by reaching out to his contacts, rather than the role being openly advertised - so he should be aware if the culture of the place is to recruit based on who the CEO thinks is a good fit for the job instead of opening up the opportunity to all. He benefited from that last time - he's lost out (potentially) this time - if he wants to benefit again he's going to have to convince the CEO before the vacancy comes up.

He's being stupid then. They might not have thought he'd have wanted it as he's new to the business and didnt speak up.

Presumably at the level he's at he needs to be able to stand up for himself.

All great points thanks so much!!! I'm gonna tell him to approach the guy that he knows and have a chat!

No point him being faint of heart. What will he lose if they refuse to interview him - and he could gain, if not the new job then the awareness that he'd he's interested in new, more challenging opportunities. 🌹

is he in a perm role at new place or contract? Is it ‘easier’ to recruit for that job than the one he’s currently doing, so they are happy to leave this status quo? He should ask, if they don’t want him to interview for a job he really wants and knows v well he can do, then his longer term options there are limited anyway ?

Or is this something he was doing quite a while back and maybe his past experience not as at the forefront of their minds hence him not being considered?

loads of possibilities only one way to find out! Ask to interview
