Need Help: Gift Ideas for Friend's Son's 18th Birthday (Under £50)

Zanzibarz · 03/05/2023 15:49

Hey everyone, I'm attending my friend's son's 18th birthday party this weekend, and I'm having a hard time finding the perfect gift. I'd appreciate any suggestions for gifts under £50. Thanks in advance!

Beer glass with name on it and happy 18th birthday

Absolutely not
with either be left at venue or given to charity or gather dust

£50 in envelope with a card saying treat yourself or £50 Amazon voucher

  1. Find out if he has a PS4/5 or Xbox and get a £50 gift card for that.
  2. Invictus, Sauvage or Million aftershave (these are top bestsellers)
  3. Bottle of Champagne and 18th Tankard (not wine glass)
  4. Lagers/Beers of the World Giftset
  5. £50 cash in a card.
  6. Giftcard for Sports Direct/JD Williams if he's into joggies and trainers and hoodies.

You can't go wrong with booze or a gift card though.

Or will follow him to uni and his first home and ve that glass that sits in the cupboard until he has no clean glasses and then he'll be very thankful and remember OP

A quality leather wallet/ card holder. Sounds a bit fuddy, duddy, but bothe my DSs grew to appreciate the ones they were given.
If you do decide on this, it’s traditionally good luck to put some money in a purses or wallet, ensuring they’ll always have funds!

monotonemusings · 03/05/2023 15:58

Can he cook or sew?

monotonemusings · 03/05/2023 15:59

I'm thinking a wok and a Jamie Oliver Cook book

Alongside all the other ones he received from both grannies and his great aunt

£50 note he may never have had one.

Cash.

AnneButNotHathaway · 04/05/2023 07:31

Cash or a gift card sound good
I don't think there is anything that would be a more perfect gift than that for a 18yo
If you and your friend are close, you can work on something like a birthday video for him and play it during the party, just make sure not to make it too cheesy

Needmorelego · 04/05/2023 08:16

What are his interests?
Not all 18 year olds want to drink alcohol.

Bamboozleme · 04/05/2023 08:18

Please listen to those of us saying cash or gift card!

WithIcePlease · 04/05/2023 08:56

Depends on his tastes
DD2 boyf been v happy with Carrhart wallet, t shirts, socks for example - v easy to buy for. DD1 boyf not interested in clothes and fancy coffee hamper was a real hit

In our family traditional-ish 18th gifts for males would have been a hip flask or something like a decent quality leather wallet (or a watch but that will be over £50 for a decent one).

As a friend's son, assuming you're not a godparent I would go with those suggesting cash or an Amazon gift card. If you wanted to you could get a symbolic gift like a nicely bound book or similar (recognising this might not be appreciated at 18 but may be later on) and add some cash as well?

Ds just had his 21st. He mostly got money but my best friend got him a pen which was engraved.

Ds loves a good pen so it was the perfect gift for him.

multivac · 04/05/2023 23:39

The £50 note is a good idea - it turns 'just cash' into a gift. Especially if, as a friend of mine did, you put it in a puzzle box...
