Anyone had strep as an adult?

Ds1 is just getting over it, I woke in the night with such a sore throat so assuming ive got it. Drs appointment this afternoon.

I'm exhausted (not helped by 3 awful nights with ds) and feel nauseous. Throat is awful. I just want to sleep but can't.

How long did it take to get over? Is there anything I can do to help it along?

Get started on the antibiotics as soon as you can. I had strep a few years ago and it turned into scarlet fever. It was horrendous, there were points at which I would genuinely happily have died. It took me about six months to properly get back to full health - and I started off from the fitness base having run a sub- three hour marathon just two weeks before.

I’m sure others will be along to tell you about how they had it and it was very mild so I wouldn’t panic - just do make sure you get the antibiotics, leaving it can be dangerous in adults far more so than in children.

I did, it's awful. By the time i saw the nurse in my surgery she put "strep+++" in my notes and had tonnes of sympathy for me. I think i was prescribed something. It was about 20 years ago but if memory serves me i was off due about a week from diagnosis and that was already several days in to it. What i remember most is that trying to swallow felt to me like trying to squeeze a car tyre with your pinky fingers.

I had it when DS1 was a baby. Worst sore throat I've ever had and I felt absolutely awful. Struggled on for the first few days not knowing what it was but ended up at OOH GP on the weekend. The antibiotics were amazing and I felt mildly under the weather within 24 hours and completely better by the end of the week / course of antibiotics.

Wfhandbored · 03/05/2023 13:46

Yeah me and DH had it a couple of months ago and it floored us. Way worse than covid when we had that also (and that was bad enough). Get some antibiotics and be sure to complete the course! I didn't complete mine and had to get another course when it returned a week later 😂

TheSnowyOwl · 03/05/2023 13:47

It’s horrible for around a week. I hope you feel better soon.

This was my experience too. Far worse than the tonsillitis I used to get as a child (I've since had my tonsils out, but still managed to get strep throat). I was prescribed antibiotics on day 5, thankfully.

Bemyclementine · 03/05/2023 14:35

I was just thinking, I can't really remember having a "proper" sore throat as an adult. At gp now

First dose of antibiotics taken. Really hope they help soon. I'm going to set an alarm to take a 3rd dose in the night.

Poor ds. I'll admit I was beginning to lose patience with him complaining about his throat yey refusing the diffuse spray. I've tried the difflam, didn't touch it.

I had it not long ago - antibiotics took ages to work with me but best to get on them asap and make sure you take the full course. I was still a bit unwell even after finishing the course.
Funnily enough the only thing that slightly helped the pain was a lemon and turmeric tea my husband made me with a good slug of whiskey in! Might be worth trying it on an evening in the short term to help the pain before you try to go to sleep and also high strength ibuprofen.

Bemyclementine · 03/05/2023 16:41

The pain is unreal. I don't have any whisky in the house.

Just swallowing saliva is agony.. I dont know what to do with myself. Can't sleep because of the pain. Dc having unlimited tablet time.

Glad you’re on the antibiotics, definitely set yourself alarms to take the doses on time - DS had it and the antibiotics kicked in quickly. A friend had it and said it was the worst she had felt as an adult.

HadalyEve · 03/05/2023 16:48

Don’t drink any whisky! That’s an old folk remedy which will impair your immune system and do nothing for strep. The whisky remedy is one of the reasons so many people died of “putrid throat” pre antibiotics.

Yes the pain is horrible. Best thing is sleep, as much liquid as you can tolerate- chicken broth is good made with boiled water and the antibiotics.

JobChangeSoonPlease · 03/05/2023 16:57

I've had it 3 times! Hell! Antibiotics + gargle with ACV & cayenne pepper powder (optional) is the best way to expedite recovery. You'll be better after a day/2 of antibiotics. Good luck.
Keep your immunity good or it could relapse (mine did).

Labraradabrador · 03/05/2023 17:00

Had this a couple weeks back, and started feeling better within 6-12 hours of first dose, but took 4 -5 days to be totally better.

ibuprofen will help, and as silly as it sounds, gargling salt water does provide relief

Bemyclementine · 03/05/2023 17:47

I've found a Pukka turmeric tea in the cupboard, also has ginger though which might be stingy . I'll add honey.

I'm not sure I could gargle currently, and ACV??? That's a hard no. Even water is painful, just swallowing saliva is agony.

I'm feeling optimistic that as I got the antibiotics far earlier than ds, it won't be as bad. Ds was ill at the weekend and navigating the out of hours service was frustrating to say the least.

I had it about 20 years ago when I was 30 ish while travelling in the USA and it was awful for a few days until I managed to get to an ED. I felt like death and of course the Doctor was heavenly! After a few days of ABx I felt SO much more human and actually able to swallow and face food again. You'll feel better soon OP x

Bemyclementine · 17/05/2023 05:56

Oh god, it's back. Throat has been slightly sore/dry for a day or 2. Woke up at 2am with it REALLY sore again. Dc has been off colour for a couple of days too so expecting him to wake up with it. "Luckily" I'm already off work this week.
