Boston, Lincolnshire

We are looking to possibly move and have been having a look in various areas around the country at 4 bed detached properties.

There have been a few that tick all the boxes in Boston, but we don’t know the area well. I’ve seen a couple of threads in here but from 4+ years ago that say do not move to Boston!!

Does anyone have any up to date opinions of the area and local villages?

We are going to go there and look around but I thought I’d ask here before quizzing locals (wink)!

Highest percentage of Leave votes in England.

So might depend on where your politics lie.

YWP · 03/05/2023 12:31

I’ve only ever heard the bad things about Boston….mainly the joke they are inbred. Sorry in advance to any locals (I don’t make this joke myself)

I would also look slightly more north. Lincoln is nice and has some good villages.

frustratednomad · 03/05/2023 12:35

Don't move to Boston! It's not known as the murder capital of Britain for no reason.

OwlBasket · 03/05/2023 12:41

No. Don’t move to Boston. Is a (measurably) awful place

DogInATent · 03/05/2023 12:41

Boston has it's attractive bits, but in general it's very deprived, very right-wing, dominated by low-skilled low-paid employment. It aspires to be better than Skegness but struggles.

I'm not sure which boxes Boston is ticking for you, but I would personally look further afield.

Buttons0522 · 03/05/2023 12:46

Don’t do it! The majority of the rest of the county is lovely though!!

CelerEtAudax · 03/05/2023 14:20

We thought about it as we could get an good-sized house for very little cash. Then we had a good look around and found out why property was so cheap. That was 10 years ago and it seems little has changed. Don't do it.

tiredandnearly40 · 03/05/2023 16:02

Well that’s decision made!! Thank you!!

I noticed that one of the houses has a swastika spray painted on the fence 😳

Don't do it. It's a dump.

I can see how that would be a hint as to the type of area it is.

GanderingGoose · 03/05/2023 16:14

Boston is really not nice. Spalding (30.mins down road) is nicer although still struggles with small town/some rural deprivation problems. Property prices are similar and its still in the grammar school system if that's a pro for you (and it's not super selective/coach your child from 8 kind of grammar). It's got 2 lovely rivers and the high street is a bit pants but Springfields shopping centre on the outskirts of fantastics and Peterborough's a 20mins drive away for all other leisure. It has a good swimming pool/gym too with plenty going on club wise for children.
It does have a problem with some far right politics and it's horrible to see racism/xenophobia towards eastern European residents but in my experience there are just as many open minded and more welcoming residents as not.

I only saw it after I posted on here! DH said “oh it can’t be” then looked… it definitely is!

Bit of a dump, rubbish location. Smells like cow shite.

GanderingGoose · 03/05/2023 17:46

Also most of Lincolnshire (especially by the coast and into the south) has rubbish car links. The A16 and A17 are awful roads which should be dual carriageway and it's about 40 mins to the A1. Definitely something to consider.

spanieleyes · 03/05/2023 17:52

Some of the villages around Boston are quite nice if you don't mind being surrounded by fields of cabbages and sprouts!

Peachyqueen · 03/05/2023 18:04

Try Bourne. Much lovelier, cheaper housing than nearby villages and a nice mix of chain and indie shops. Alot going on in the town.

SocialLite · 03/05/2023 18:27

Most of Lincolnshire, including very very close to Boston, is absolutely lovely. I wouldn't live in the town centre, but there are some really lovely areas and very good value for money.

If you want to, feel free to pm me some property details and I'll let you know more!

Doobydoo · 03/05/2023 18:32

We are about 20 mins from Boston. It isn't nice at all..some nice villages though. Perhaps look at Cliff Villages....Welbourn,Navenby. I would rather live in Grantham which also isn't great but regular trains to London.

WittyTurtle · 31/10/2024 12:53

We viewed the house you're talking about, recognised it from what you said. Swaztika on the fence.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 31/10/2024 12:59

@WittyTurtle how recently did you view the house? Was there anything else odd inside?

Hatty65 · 31/10/2024 13:22

I know Boston well, and it's not as bad as it's made out. Neither is Grimsby, or Scunthorpe. Boston and Skegness voted in a Reform MP, which is pretty much entirely due to the issues problems immigration has caused in both towns and the frustration of not being listened to by politicians.

However. Lincolnshire is cheap for a reason. People moving here who are astounded by cheap house prices need to consider the fact that there is little industry or employment. The whole of the coastal strip is designated as a socially deprived area. The crime levels aren't bad in general and I've always felt safe here, but hospital provision, transport, social activities, culture, etc are really minimal.

There are benefits to Lincolnshire, and some nice places to live. But it's a long, long drive to anywhere else. If you have DC be aware that Lincolnshire has very limited opportunities for them.

WittyTurtle · 31/10/2024 15:22

We viewed the house last year in June. 2023.
Detached house, large garden.

WittyTurtle · 25/08/2025 02:50

Viewed it as well

I second this!
