Should I be encouraging DC to eat?

Dc1 has strep, incredibly sore throat. Ate a tiny amount for breakfast Saturday morning and nothing since. He's having cslpol, nurofen, and penicillin. I'm worried having all this and not eating isn't good fir his stomach abd that he needs to eat to start getting better.

But what? Even milk stings his throat, as does yogurt (takes the AB tablet in a spoon of yogurt).

I've tried ice pops, ice cream, weetabix, McD milkshake. Lucozade. He's surviving on water.

He normally eats well buy is very slim already, he went dizzy and fell over yesterday.

I thought you weren't supposed to eat yoghurt at the same time as antibiotics? It interacts with them and makes them less effective, you're supposed to have the yoghurt a few hours after the ab's. (And anything else dairy based)

How about soup?
sports drink
I would try to avoid hot or cold, keep as close to body temp as possible.

Sirzy · 02/05/2023 08:23

I would focus on making sure he keeps the fluids up for now

can you get some difflam spray? That may help ease the pain and make it easier to consider eating

Bemyclementine · 02/05/2023 08:25

Yogurt is the only way he can take the tablets.

I do have difflam but he doesn't want to use it, which is trying my patience somewhat.

Doesn't eat soup under normal circumstances, maybe a bit of heinze tomato but I feel that would be very sting inducing.

I got him a lucozade he usually likes it stings . Usually drinks milk, that stings too. Squash stings....

That’s certainly not the case for all antibiotics.

3FriendsAndADog · 02/05/2023 08:40

I’d ensure that he keeps drinking.
The pain should settle down quickly with the ABs.
If it doesn’t improve after a 3~4 days, I’d go back to see the GP.

Pip1402 · 02/05/2023 08:41

It's bet to avoid ibuprofen on an empty stomach if possible. So if he is able to eat anything, try to time it before the nurofen.

FriendsAbroad · 02/05/2023 08:41

I'd focus on fluids. I lived on tinned custard at room temperature and supermarket mash(Because it's completely smooth) with lots of butter mixed in(Warm not hot) last time I had a throat infection. I don't know if those would work for him but it worked for me. I found that room temperature things were more tolerable than hot or cold.

I hope that he feels better soon.

Tessisme · 02/05/2023 08:44

I agree with pp's. I would very much concentrate on fluids. When your child is ready to eat, you will know. A few days of very little or even no food isn't going to do any harm.

carolinestowcrat · 02/05/2023 09:24

Some chicken broth or proper (Jewish) chicken soup is so good when ill. If you can make it yourself, even better. (There's plenty of recipes online and you don't need a kosher chicken either). Eat it after it's cooled to tepid. It won't sting the throat.

I've had strep throat previously, as well as numerous bouts of laryngitis. A humidifier really helped too.

Bemyclementine · 02/05/2023 09:32

Thanks. He's having the ibuprofen as paracetamol isn't enough to keep his temperature down. Having that on an empty stomach was one of my concerns. Well all the meds and no food really.

It's more that anything he's trued is stinging the soreness of his throat, rather than the swallowing action I think. I'm hoping today will be the turning point, it's horrible for him.

What about things like mashed potato with lots of butter, or those little jelly pots?

It might sting but if he likes the food enough he may tolerate it a bit better?

newtowelsplease · 02/05/2023 09:38

There's a spray you can buy for sore throats called chloraseptic which is really good, it completely numbs the pain.

Food wise I would try something high calorie and creamy like a milkshake

MisschiefMaker · 02/05/2023 17:36

I had strep recently and was scared to eat as it was so painful and (warning! TMI!) I had all these pockets of pus in my throat and I was scared that food would scratch the surface and they'd burst open.

Since strep is bacterial I wouldn't give sugary crap like ice cream either, surely that might delay recovery? Just give soup.

Bemyclementine · 02/05/2023 18:01

That sounds awful @MisschiefMaker . I can't see his throat as he can't open his mouth wide enough.

At this stage I'm not fussed scout what he eats, I'd just like him to be getting energy from something, sugary crap or otherwise

He doesn't like soup.

Has he tried using straws for his milk/lucozade type fluids? May sting a bit less

Bemyclementine · 02/05/2023 18:53

He had a straw for a milkshake and had 2 sips and cried. 😔

@MisschiefMaker my throat felt a bit dry and sore last night. I've just woken up to it being ansolute agony. I don't have any other symptoms yet.

What helped??

Apple sauce

ladycardamom · 03/05/2023 02:02

You could gargle some aspirin for your throat. Not for children tho. How old is he? I'd just spray the diflam in his mouth, it'll work it's way towards the back.

SageHoney · 03/05/2023 02:05

Spoonfuls of hummus might work? The kind with tahini is a good hit of protein and very nutritious for a small amount eaten. Use 'classic' or 'original' so there's no extra flavour or texture to deal with. Can be served cold or cool if that's soothing to him, but also OK at room temperature or even slightly warm.

Missingmyusername · 03/05/2023 02:06

DD also couldn’t eat initially. She would take Difflam spray and ate ice cream, plain boiled pasta, bread and butter.

Hope the antibiotics kick in soon.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/05/2023 02:09

How old is he?

Bemyclementine · 03/05/2023 04:43

Hes 7. He had a ice pop and 4 spoons of Greek yogurt yesterday (to take the antibiotics tablet in). He was definitely feeling better, but his throat was still very sore.

My throat is also incredibly sore now so I'm assuming I've got it. I hope I don't get as ill as he did, god knows how ill manage.
