Telescope in the garden

I'm in Spain at thw moment. Walking along the promenade there was a guy charging €1 to look at the moon through his telescope. I have always been fascinated by the moon, had some interest in astrology. Just wondering if anyone has a telescope in their house or garden, would it be a folly to purchase one?

They're quite expensive. Novelty wore out quite quickly for DSS who had one.
Do you have an observatory you could visit instead?

We've got this sort: www.amazon.co.uk/Celestron-21024-76-mm-Firstscope/dp/B001UQ6E4Y/

Which is easy to set up on a stool or table in the back garden, or we took it to a dark sky park and set it up on a picnic table.

Get an accessory pack with a finderscope because, especially if you're using high magnification, the sky is a really, really big place and it can be difficult to pinpoint what you want to look at - even the moon.

Also, if it's just the moon you want to look at, you can get a decent view of craters etc with binoculars which are obviously a lot easier to store (but not necessarily cheaper).

Try a pair of binoculars first.

We do have one but it's a bit heavy and not too easy to set up. We also have good binoculars and a birdwatching scope with a tripod - that's a lot easier and is fine for looking at the moon (and can take on holiday for wildlife.). Those aren't cheap though.
