Syrup lollipops/cakes - anyone know the recipe?

Back in the 80s when no one cared how much sugar kids had, my mam used to make a type of sweet from golden syrup. It was basically golden syrup boiled with something else (water? sugar? sugar water?) and poured into cake cases and left to set. The end result was an inch thick chewy disc of syrup. We used to call them cakes but I suppose they were more like a lolly without the stick. The paper cake cases would usually stick to it so sometimes we'd save up Mr Kipling foil trays to use too.

They definitely weren't just something done in my house as the school tuck shop used to sell ones the dinner ladies made and there would always be some on the cake stall of the Brownies summer fayre.

Does anyone remember their mum making these? If so, does anyone know the recipe? Google was no help. Going to a family party in a few weeks and planning to make some as a blast from the past for my siblings and cousins.

That looks amazing but no. It was like a solidified block of syrup, used to take ages to just eat one and the more you chewed on it the softer it got.

We had red candy that came in foil cases in the 70s in Scotland. It was the same stuff that coated the candy apples at Halloween.

That's kind of what it was like but not red.

Now that you say that, I seem to remember a opaque brown /beige one.

That would be the one.

Was it bonfire toffee?
This recipe sounds about right, but instead of a big tin we also made it in foil or paper cases with a lolly stick stuck in horizontally.

I remember these, my grandma used to make them but she would lay a lollipop stick in each one.
Is this recipe any good? The ones in the recipe are clear but if you substituted golden syrup for the light corn syrup they would be golden.

My Gran made this when I was growing up in Bristol, England. She just poured the boiled liquid into a sponge tin and let it set. Then she broke it up with a small hammer. No wonder I have so many fillings!

I reckon Bonfire toffee!

Look for James McConnell's traditional toffee recipe but don't get it quite as hot and it will come out a bit softer. The flavour will be the same. Stay away from any recipe with cream or milk in. Don't forget the vinegar.
