FB Marketplace - CF offer etiquette

I don't know whether to laugh or cry when a chancer offers less than 50% of the asking price, then tries again after I say no with only a tiny increment more.

I've ignored him this time, but he's sent further messages asking how low I'd let my item go for. At this point I just don't want to sell it to him even if he agrees to the asking price.

I usually use eBay or Vinted, so FB selling as all new to me.

What would you have done in this situation? I keep reading stories about how sellers are harassed when they decide not to sell to a potential buyer.

People are so odd on there. I had a huge tent on for £200, somebody messaged me to say 'I'll do £80' - erm, no you won't! I just ignored 🙄

SquatBetty · 01/05/2023 18:11

Ignore or block

BuffyTheCat · 01/05/2023 18:22

Just block him. No need to engage further.

Worriedmotheroftwo · 01/05/2023 18:48

Ha, I try it on with a cheeky offer all the time! Sometimes pays off, sometimes doesn't. Just say no and if they keep asking, just block. Imo nothing wrong with them asking, but you have every opportunity to block so why don't you if you're not happy?

TulipCat · 01/05/2023 18:50

Second hand stuff is only worth what people are prepared to pay, so people offer what they personally are prepared to pay. No need to be offended, just say their offer is far too low given the interest you have. Block them if they get rude or aggressive though.

People are so strange ! I’m trying to sell my Bugaboo Cameleon pushchair and have had so many odd messages. Clearly scammers trying to get me to pay for insurance as they want to send a courier over with money .. block!

Haveallthesongsbeenwritten · 01/05/2023 19:00

Never used FB but i have been using ebay for years, i every now and then get the odd silly offer. For example i was selling a brand new necklace worth £90, kept having a woman wanting to buy it for £40 saying this is all she could afford 😂 not my problem!

LakeTiticaca · 01/05/2023 19:09

Just block then they can't harrass you.

pbdr · 01/05/2023 21:24

It depends really. I often see very optimistically priced things on FB marketplace, such as kids items at 75%+ of the brand new price, and it unsurprisingly sits there for months unsold. In those circumstances I will sometimes offer the actual second hand value, which is typically considerably lower than what they are asking. I'm sure some of them think I'm a CF, but often they will accept, having realised that their asking price was wishful thinking.

I regularly do cheeky offers 😬 quite often they get accepted because people just want rid of their stuff. I usually message first and ask if they’d be up for a cheeky offer and test the waters like that! Shy bairns get nowt!

xsquared · 01/05/2023 22:19

One cheeky offer is fine to test the waters, but you don't get to cheek me twice!

Anyway, when he wouldn't relent, I blocked.

I put something on at the weekend. Filthy dusty. Reasonable price. First contact asked where we were and said he'd arrive at 6pm. He messaged me when he set off and turned up a bit early. Paid the actual amount asked with no haggling.
Absolutely amazing.

Going to risk it again soon.

Normally it's a nightmare with people being twats.
