I thought it was a hornet as its just over a inch long but of course I can't measure it! It's also got a orange/ red tinge to legs and wings but not on the head or body. Wrong type of spots on the back too to be a hornet? Can't belive I was ever offered a job as an entomologist! Google says common wasp but it's too big, too orangey. The markings look perfect apart from that is it really a huge wasp?

Looks like a wrap to me - maybe a Queen ? Definitely not a hornet

sinusincrisis · 01/05/2023 10:31

Wrap ? Lol - Wasp !

AllOfThemWitches · 01/05/2023 10:32

Christ that is horrifying.

CupEmpty · 01/05/2023 10:34

Queen wasp. They are looking for places for a nest this time of year. We have had 6 in our conservatory over the last week or so.

DyslexicPoster · 01/05/2023 10:36

Yes it does look exactly like a wasp. But huge. And with orange wings and legs. Is the queen a different colour? It's also a bit chunky in the abdomen. In real life it looks nothing like a wasp. My son gasped and fell backwards. I'd put my finger near it for comparison but I'm not that brave

It's beautiful

Do I need to get rid? Not wanting a nest near me tbh

Yes, get rid - you really don't want her nesting in your house.

RatSlave · 01/05/2023 11:05

Don't kill her please. Just pop her back outside to find a new place to nest. Wasps are still pollinators.

stbrandonsboat · 01/05/2023 11:08

We need wasps as they pollinate plants. Please don't just kill things. I've been interacting with wasps all my life and have never been stung.

Isheabastard · 01/05/2023 11:09

Before you do anything to it, please google Insect Armageddon. Wasps are just as beneficial to the environment as bees are.

I had a wasps nest outside my bedroom window last year and used to keep the bedroom window open. No problem and nobody got stung.

Ref hornets. There’s a problem with invasive Asian hornets, but I was told that native hornets are no danger to bees.

I have put up crumpled brown paper bags up at my window before when I see the queens flying around. The crumpled bag is supposed to look like a wasp nest and the queen won’t want to be near it.

It’s entirely up to you of course, and many people are phobic about wasps (I can’t stand maggots). But as your first instinct isn’t to squash it, I wonder if you might think twice.

DanceBeneathADiamondSky · 01/05/2023 11:09

I had to herd one out of my bathroom last week and it was enormous! Sounded like a bloody helicopter 😂

There are wasps' nests everywhere. You don't need to kill it. I hate wasps as well, but they aren't even particularly aggressive this time of year. Just get her out of the house.

FrenchandSaunders · 01/05/2023 11:09

It’s not an Asian hornet is it? 😳

DyslexicPoster · 01/05/2023 11:13

I'm presuming it's a queen wasp so it's under a glass now and going to the woods later on a short walk from the house. I really don't want a nest near the kids. The odd hornet nest is fine as they are a real rarity near us ( had a hornet in the house every day for a month - they was helicopters!) But that was once in many years. Biggest wasp I have ever seen bar none!

Queen wasp looking for somewhere nice to set up home

No the markings seem all wrong. The triangles and spots say wasp. Just a bloody big one! The markings of the triangles on the thorax are just like a common wasp, except its quite orange in real life.
The hornets I normally see have orange/ red body parts. This was only the legs and wings. The last hornet I saw was nearer 2" long with a redish face ( I don't t mind getting very close, they seem quite docile if you don't touch anything they perch on)

Markings are a better fit for German wasp than common wasp. It will be a queen.
