I like to wear black - wish people wouldn't comment on it!

I'm currently trying to lose weight. I'm not feeling confident about my body and I feel more comfortable in wearing darker colours - black, navy, dark grey. For some reason, people seem to think it's ok to make comments about it and I don't understand why this is ok.

For example, I recently went to an event and was wearing a black dress with a light-coloured coat. Someone who I see regularly through a hobby but who is more of an acquaintance than a friend walks up and says 'nice to see you in something other than black'. I smiled and said 'yeah' but inside I was like 'urgh, really?'

In his mind maybe that was a compliment but it's not the first time people have made comments like that. I've had people say 'oh you should wear red...you wear a lot of black' or 'your wardrobe has a lot of black in it'. I honestly can't imagine thinking it's ok to offer a critique on what someone else is wearing. For example if a person didn't like my dress, they'd presumably never come up and say 'you should wear something else'. But for some reason when it comes to black, some people feel like it's ok to bring it up?

Obviously I'm being over-sensitive (I know this, so no need to tell me!!) because my real reason for wearing black all the time is discomfort with my (current) extra weight. But even if it wasnt, what's wrong with wearing black all the time if that's what I want to do? I don't understand why it's ok to make comments about it. Hhmmm!

I agree with you OP. Though I have been a lot of sizes, whether I’m a ten or a sixteen, my clothes are either black, metallic or in high summer, neutral. I actually feel like a panto dame in most colours and think clothes look weird when they’re not black or camel 😂I’ve had more comments about wearing black all the time than I can count. I just think ‘yeah well, look at the nick of you.’ It’s never someone with a strong sartorial sense who makes these remarks is it?

Rockbird · 01/05/2023 11:40

I get comments too. I wear black, navy, dark grey and dark red. I detest bright or pale colours with every fibre of my being. If other people don't like it, tough titty. None of their business.

Fandabedodgy · 01/05/2023 11:48

I wear a mostly black too. If people don't like it they don't need to wear black themselves.

And they can feck off

Some arsehole thought it was funny to keep commenting that I always wore black. Guess what? I don’t see that arsehole anymore. It’s draining, intrusive and fucking rude. Piss off and take a look at yourself.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 01/05/2023 11:56

No one is saying it to piss you off, if anything it's a clumsy compliment. Try and accept it for what it is 🙂

Personally I spent most of my 20s and 30s in black (or navy) for the same reasons until I got to an age where black makes me look like the undead. I haven't had my colours done but it turns out my best colour is red and I always get compliments when I wear it. Also light blue.

I am also overweight.

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 01/05/2023 12:04

Where l live l am referred to as "the young widow" so l make a point of wearing anything but black.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/05/2023 12:04

I tend to reply in the same vein...." Why do you always wear bright colours, it would be good to see you wearing something darker once in a while".

Yeah, except most people don’t want to see others in darker colours 😂

You might think black looks flattering on you but for most people black is just drab and boring and advertises that you’re trying to hide a weight problem 🤷‍♀️

TheNachtzehrer · 01/05/2023 12:53

It sounds like people are trying to tell you that black washes you out.

Amandasummers · 01/05/2023 12:57

I always wear black and the comments are constant. It's boring

I think "most people" wouldn't actually give a fat rat's crack what others wear. I'm a 5 ft 8 and a size 10 so I'm hardly advertising trying to hide a weight problem. 😂

GG1986 · 01/05/2023 13:17

I always wear black too! Only person who has an issue with it is my bloody mother! Don't give a crap what she thinks and I continue to wear black. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in x

LlynTegid · 01/05/2023 13:56

I wish you felt differently, however that is very different from commenting on someone else's choice of what they wear. Comments on clothing should only ever be positive ones if at all, and even then silence is probably best in most situations.

MidnightMeltdown · 01/05/2023 14:14

When people stick to black it's often because they have no confidence when it comes to dressing. Black makes people feel safe for some reason, but it actually suits very few people.

I expect that comments are meant as encouragement (I.e. someone lacking confidence in something is coming out and trying something new, so people want to be supportive and give encouragement).

MidnightMeltdown · 01/05/2023 14:18

For example if a person didn't like my dress, they'd presumably never come up and say 'you should wear something else'.

They might if you were wearing it everyday. The difference is that you are wearing black everyday.

the80sweregreat · 01/05/2023 16:33

I love black clothes. I did buy a bright t shirt for my holiday, but mostly it's black or navy or dark green.

rewilded · 01/05/2023 10:20

It is depressing for other people to have to look at though. Imagine if everyone wore black? It would be like the whole world in mourning.

Wtf 😳😂😂😂

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/05/2023 17:33

I think black can look very sleek and polished however if its worn like my ex boss wore it then its like the grim reaper striding around the place minus the sithe.

MrsCharlieD · 01/05/2023 17:33

Wow your friends would hate me. I pretty much only wear black but I was a teenage goth and it turns out it was very much not a phase. Wear what you want. Literally couldn't give 2 shits what people think about how I dress!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 01/05/2023 17:49

I wear lots of black also and have had the comments about it. I would never comment on what others are wearing as none of my business. Wear black lipstick to piss off the ones who keep saying you are always in black, that will shut them up.

Indoorcatmum · 01/05/2023 18:31

I get the same, but the opposite.

I am always in floral and bright colours and if I wear black people go mental saying it's more sophisticated and sexier blah blah blah.

It's so annoying and I find it rude! My style isn't what they want to see, so they try to comment heavily when they DO like something... Maybe in order to encourage me to wear black or navy more often?

BIG eyeroll.

bellac11 · 01/05/2023 18:34

I love black and have always worn a lot of it, mostly dressed in black. I wouldnt give it a second thought.

Hotchick1972 · 01/05/2023 18:40

I only wear black including work clothes and pyjamas 🤷🏻‍♀️
throwback to my teenage goth days I expect 😂

I have dressed almost exclusively in black for years- occasionally charcoal grey or white. I don’t own any coloured clothes.

why the actual fuck would someone not want to see people in dark colours?! Who would care?!

DrFoxtrot · 01/05/2023 18:59

So wearing black a lot is boring, depressing for other people, advertising you've got a weight problem and possibly makes you looked washed out 🤔 and others are being encouraging when suggesting wearing other colours.

Would you also suggest someone changes their hairstyle if you find it boring? Or their hair colour if it makes them look washed out?

I don't understand why it's anything to do with anyone but the wearer. People can piss off with their 'encouragement' 😂.
