I need time off in july to have a mastectomy. Surgery is on the Tuesday.
I wfh at a computer. Do you think I could go back the following week or should take that week off too? I've looked o macmillian and it suggests 4-8 weeks off!
I can't afford that . Nor do I think my job is strenuous. It'll literally be a walk tomorrow office, sit at computer for work and lots of meetings will be able to keep camera off.
Do you think 1 week is too early?

I had stomach surgery and was back WFH four days later. Not sure if it was the best idea only in terms of being a bit spacey still on the painkillers. But it was fine. Might be a wait and see how you feel at the time thing though.

Do you know get sick leave to recover from surgery? You said you cannot afford it.

Can you see your GP to get signed off a decent recovery period? That is what my secretary did after surgery.

How long will the drains be in for?

The surgeon says he does stitches so no drains but I'm sceptical. My work is nicest would probably pay me or I can use holidays I guess. Its an awkward conversation to have a work.

If you can afford it two week’s minimum get the anaesthetic out your system and assuming no post op infections. Also depends on what other demand on your time apart from work as well. I hope it goes ok.

Have the conversation with work ans understand what you will receive (it will be at least statutory sick pay after the first few days and they may pay you more). I think you would be pushing it to go back that quickly and you should absolutely give yourself time to heal. You don't know how you will react to the anaesthetic, the pain killers and the recovery generally. I had keyhole abdominal surgery and was signed off for 3.5 weeks and more significant surgery where I was off for 4 months and had to be signed off by an occupational health doctor before I was allowed back.
