Are there any prescription sunglasses that aren't too ugly?

BotCrossedHun · 30/04/2023 19:22

I had precription sunnies before, but they looked awful. They were tiny frames like my glasses, and didn't really look like sunglasses properly; the sun came in around the edges, too.

But I have a high near-sighted prescription with astigmatism so the edges are already thicker, plus I need varifocals now too, so even choosing bigger lenses is probably going to look a bit weird too, isn't it, even more thick and non-sunglass like. And frames able to hold those sorts of lenses are just going to look like brown tinted normal glasses I think, ugly as my old ones which I didn't end up wearing much.

Can't decide if it's worth bothering trying to find anything more. Even with prescription sunglasses, I'd have to keep changing back and forth when I went indoors or out. They'd be useful for driving I guess but not sure about much else (at the moment I have the even uglier 'over glasses' for when I really have to and the sun visor isn't enough!! But I don't wear them out of the car...)

That effortless summertime cool that some people have, wearing sunglasses, or having them on their heads, just looks so laid-back and chic. But I think it's just not possible for me, already frumpy at the best of times.

I can't get contact lenses, so are my only options really ugly prescription ones, or just keep on trying to avoid the sun.

Anyone found anything remotely attractive that can hold a strong prescription?

your optician should be able to put tinted lenses into pretty much any frame of your choice in the store.

my prescrption sunglasses aren’t from the sunglasses range

Xrays · 30/04/2023 19:25

I am -9.50 in both eyes with severe astigmatism. If you’re prepared to spend more you can get basically any style of frame you like and have the lenses tinted and thinned - they’ll look just like normal sunglasses. I usually have varifocals in my day to day glasses (I pay a lot for independent opticians ones as I find the lenses are better quality than asda / specsavers, tried both) but for sunglasses I just get distance ones as I wouldn’t really use them for reading etc anyway and that brings the price right down.

I get prescription lenses in Ray Bans and Maui Jims. Blooming expensive but it is totally doable.

I'm quite shortsighted and got a plastic cat eye shaped pair in Specsavers about two years ago. Splurged for gradiated tint which I love. Not quite as cool as normal sunnies but they're fun to wear and go with my summer stuff. I feel like Specsavers have upped their game a bit recently. Other opticians probably have even better stuff!

DanceBeneathADiamondSky · 30/04/2023 19:27

Yes, as a pp said you can get prescription designer brands. When my DCs are older (and less likely to destroy my glasses) I want prescription Ray Bans

Highlandhome · 30/04/2023 19:29

So many options - as above your optician can put tinted lenses in pretty much any frame. However, there's more and more stores offering just the glasses - not an optician, a dispenser maybe not sure the term. One I've seen friends use is www.veryspexy.com
I need varifocal now, and pay for thinner lenses .... I wear mine for the slightest hint of sun when driving.

Also remember that you can get so many combinations of tint - different colours, and graduation of tint to suit. I've also seen "vintage" glasses being fitted with new tinted lenses.

I got some from specsavers years ago, cath kidson brand. They look like normal sunglasses. Unfortunately I need a new prescription. I've been looking on glasses direct as they have a huge selection. I was really impressed with my regular glasses from there.

Another thought, have you tried contact lenses? I use them 5 days a week for work and it's much easier, I can just wear regular sunglasses apart from when I go to the beach (swimming etc).

QueenofLouisiana · 30/04/2023 19:29

I have a large pair of Karen Millen sunglasses. They are heavier than my usual sunnies (for use when wearing contacts), but look like my normal style. I also have tinted reading glasses, off the shelf from Flying Tiger.

CMOTDibbler · 30/04/2023 19:29

Yes, there so much choice in sunglasses frames, and I think that with sunglasses you can go for a much chunkier frame (as is really common with non prescription sunglasses) than you would with your normal glasses. I still have my sunglasses lenses thinned, but am happier to have bigger lenses (so the edge ends up thicker than my normal ones) in sunglasses as I go for a thicker frame

SootspriteSearcher · 30/04/2023 19:30

Sorry ignore my last paragraph I didn't see your last bit of the post 🙈

Alsogoingtogetslated · 30/04/2023 19:32

I’ve got prescription Ray bans. Boots refused to do it as said my prescription was too high and the lense would be too thick- Rayban direct did it no problem.

LubaLuca · 30/04/2023 19:32

My husband has high prescription varifocals in Ray Bans. Don't limit yourself to the 'sunglasses' stand at the opticians.

Imtoooldforallthis · 30/04/2023 19:35

What about something like this from glasses direct you can have them made as sunglasses.

Crunchymum · 30/04/2023 19:36

I have my lenses in Prada sunglasses.

My prescription isn't anything too usual though. Just shortsighted in both eyes (but not massively so)

BotCrossedHun · 30/04/2023 19:36

Thanks, maybe I need to see what else the opticians have in stock.

I don't really want normal frames with tinted lenses, though, that's what I'm trying to avoid! I've had them before and it just looked so frumpy with my prescription, though I'm willing to believe it is better now.

my prescription is similar to one mentioned earlier, -9.5 ish and oblique axes for astigmatism so the corners of the lenses get very thick, even with thinning. I take the point about not worrying too much about progressive lenses/varifocals for sunglasses that are mostly for distance, but without them, I can't even do things like check my phone really, which would be inconvenient. Not sure about reading a sat nav or the dashboard either.

I wish I could wear contact lenses for occasional use but my eyes get sore easily from them. I might be able to for distance, but would need readers for almost everything, so I guess I'd still have to get reading prescription in the sunglasses. Contacts would only be for occasional use, but they don't make them in daily versions with astigmatism and multifocal!! That's asking a lot of the lens makers I guess. But it woudl be much easier for wearing sunglasses with for sure.

so maybe starting at the opticians isn't the way to go? But trying to find some nice ordinary ones, and then taking them to the opticians to see about lenses?

Online places like glasses direct aren't usually keen on high prescriptions and varifocals as it needs to be measured a bit more carefully than usual prescriptions. So I think I need to physically go somewhere. Plus need to try them on, as I look bad in a lot of frames!

I need a sunglasses shop with a good assistant to tell me what looks OKish out of a variety of brands that would also take my lenses. But apart from opticians, not sure where that would be.

I have varifocals with the lenses that go dark in the sun (photochromic!?). I got them in Asda and they were £100. They also do a range of sunglasses and they include varifocals in their inclusive of lenses prices. I can't recommend them highly enough.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 30/04/2023 19:42

What kind of frames do you like? Mine are plastic frames that look like “normal” sunglasses. My lenses aren’t particularly thick but DH’s are and his would fit into my frames depth-wise.

The swapping between glasses is a bit of a nuisance, but at least I can see.

Xrays · 30/04/2023 19:46

I’ve just been playing around on the Ray-Ban website, I had no idea they had a prescription section 😁 (£550 for my prescription however but I’m having fun daydreaming)!

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 19:47

I have severe astigmatism and mild myopia.

I have a fab pair of sunglasses on the 2 for 1 frames at spec savers.

They look like normal fashion sunglasses which is important to me.

itsgettingweird · 30/04/2023 19:50

www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/ll-sun-rx-03?sku=32262896

It's these.

I got the cath kidston frames for my normal glasses (also £129) and got them coated, eye test and these all for about £200 in total.

So it depends what your budget is.

Rockbird · 30/04/2023 19:51

Another one here with a high prescription and astigmatism and I have multiple pairs of prescription lenses in Ray Ban sunglasses. I also have a big standard pair off the shelf at Specsavers and they look great too.

justasoul · 30/04/2023 19:51

My prescription sunglasses are just Rayban aviators - Vision express replaced the lenses for prescription gradient lenses identical to the original ones.

BotCrossedHun · 30/04/2023 19:51

I don't know what I like yet. I look bad in most of them I think, summertime cool is just not something that ever describes frumpy, sweaty me. So I need an assistant who can help me choose perhaps. Plus it's hard when you wear glasses to try on frames that you can't really see - end up taking selfies, but it's still hard :) But I think some kind of plastic frames that look like normal sunglasses would be good, if they would put my lenses in them. I didn't know where to buy such a thing that they could replace the lenses, as I've only ever got cheapish things before from Boots or whatever.

I suspect my prescription might be similar cost, Xrays, so I may have to keep dreaming for another year first, as my progressive regular glasses were already more than that last month.

Not sure about photochromatic lenses. I think it could look odd with my prescription with small frames when tinted, or large frames when untinted. I have also heard that they don't darken in the car because of the UV filter in the windscreen, so that wouldn't help that problem.

I suspect it's going to be a very expensive prospect, whatever I do. So I want to choose the right thing. I've never spent more than about £30 on sunglasses before when I had contacts, just things from Fat Face or wherever, or my misguided attempt at the too-tiny prescription ones from Specsavers years ago.
