Spent the afternoon with my dad (b. 1948). Kids fascinated that there was one telly in the street, and hoping they get a tin of free sweets at school too!

One family in my dad's street had a TV so everyone piled in there to watch it.

My Father ( born 1934 , no longer with us ) lived near London , in Isleworth and went up to London to be in the crowd with his brother
He always told us he sat on one of the lion statues in The Mall , not sure if that’s true , but he was in the crowd somewhere and did talk about it

AlltheFs · 30/04/2023 19:54

Yes. My mums family got their first TV for it!
My Dad remembers it but didn’t see it (didn’t know anyone with a TV-they were poorer).

My DM (82) tells me about her family getting a tv just for the coronation and all their neighbours coming in to watch.

FredaFox · 30/04/2023 19:56

Yes it was on my mums 10th birthday and they got a tv, first in their family to get one so everyone came round to watch the tiny tv

DM was talking about this earlier, only one household had a television so they all crowded around that to watch the Coronation itself. She said that there was a party in the local village hall; and every child was given a coronation mug at school.

I'm ignoring the whole thing, going to be away for the weekend, and out and about on the Saturday!

DF (81) remembers having to draw a picture of a coach at school. I think he will have been about 11 at the time. Not sure if he was able to watch it on a TV. I'll have to ask him.

What a lovely thought that our grandparents might have been there together.

The gifts for children are interestingly different- was this a council/ school thing do you think?

I was also born in 1948 OP. My first memory was watching the Coronation on a friend's tiny black and white TV. Don't remember getting anything at school though.

My mum and all of her secondary school class (in East London) were taken to watch the Queen go past in her golden carriage on her coronation tour of London.

My grandmother was the first in the street to have a TV set and all of the neighbours piled into the living room of her flat to watch the coronation.

Dm remembers it mostly because they got a TV to watch it on.

A bit like my dsis doesn't remember me being born, but remembers the washing machine that arrived the week before. 🤣

MouseKeys · 30/04/2023 20:52

Same as mine @DorotheaHomeAlone , 96 years young and this will be her fourth monarch, she's already got the bunting out and has tidied up the garden ! 🥰

Numbersarefun · 30/04/2023 20:58

My dad (b1944) remembers it. They didn’t have a TV ( and didn’t know anyone who did) so listened to it on the radio.

MirrorMirror1247 · 30/04/2023 21:06

My dad was 4 and has a vague memory of a street party. My mum wasn't born until the following year.

My grandparents are all dead, but one of my grandmothers kept scrapbooks and one of them has loads of newspaper cutouts about the coronation.

Gingerkittykat · 30/04/2023 21:07

My grandparents bought a TV for the occasion and had guests round to watch.

I've still got the mug they gave my mum at school in a box in the loft.

MissMarplesNiece · 30/04/2023 21:08

My grandma (dad's mum) bought a TV specially to watch it. My mum's mum & dad went round to her house to watch it.

One of my uncle's was in the Life Guards and rode his horse in the Queen's coronation procession. He'd also been part of George VI's funeral.

LighterNights · 30/04/2023 21:41

My mum 79, has been talking about the last coronation today. So yes, both mum and dad remember.
