Return ticket on train. Is it now just one actual ticket for both journeys?

I'm travelling into London tomorrow for the first time in years. I've booked an open return train ticket and printed them off at a station so I'm ready.

But only 1 ticket printed. Do you not get a separate return ticket anymore? I'm worried I've messed up somehow.

Can anyone ease my anxiety 😂? Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the journey (and would never admit that irl).

Tia

No problem 😌, have a lovely time 😊

Why do you have luggage if you are only going for one day?

We went to London before covid, as country bumpkins from north Scotland , and I found the travel super easy. Everything is very clear and there's so many trains/tubes, that even if you miss one, there'll be more. Just avoid rush hour.

Too outing to say what we are lugging halfway across the country, but we do it most weekends for dd's hobby, but we can normally take a car and park at venue.

Hopefully won't be a rush hour tomorrow 🤞 as timing is out of my control.

@user1471530109 it's a Bank Holiday tomorrow so it will be off-peak all day. There will be no time restrictions for travelling so you can get whatever trains you want 🙂

LuluTaylor · 30/04/2023 15:48

That's a one day travel card OP. It's valid for trains/tube/bus through all London zones. Just hop on and off as necessary, there's no limits on how much you can use it and it'll expire at midnight so return home whenever it suits you.

You obviously don’t live far from London, @user1471530109! Are you not keen on the place? Or did you mean it’s the first time in years you’ve travelled there by train?

(My return ticket is ever closer to £100, even with a senior railcard … Angry)

user1471530109 · 30/04/2023 16:25

@MetaDaughter I promise you I live over 2 hours away by train and car! Maybe it's cheap because it's bank holiday?

Which station are you coming in at?

If you have luggage, might be better to try and get to Paddington and then take the Elizabeth Line to Liverpool Street.

If you do use one of the others (H&C, Circle and Metropolitan) that PP have suggested, be aware that they can randomly change their line and destination to one of the others in that “group” en route (generally at Edgware Road). Shouldn’t matter to you as they all stop at Liverpool Street, but just mentioning it so you’re prepared!

Def a ‘one day’ ticket so can use it there and back on the same day from your station and in London zones.

@MetaDaughter I always use the tfl journey planner if I need to zip about on the underground. It tells you the best routes and the results are in real time

Sugarfish · 30/04/2023 16:45

Sorry not @MetaDaughter I meant to tag @user1471530109 having a nightmare on here this afternoon!

I went last week and we only had one ticket each. It worked to get us there and back and used in all tube stations visited. Although I found it much easier to use the large gates for me and children as it meant we could all go though at once and just use one ticket. Hardly anyone checked we each had a ticket as I think under 10s are free on the underground anyway.
check for routes and tubes as I’m sure I heard there were works in certain places over the bank holiday weekend.

amoretti · 30/04/2023 17:06

A few weeks ago I popped to London and got an all day travel card. It was a printed ticket just like yours.
A few days later I went into London again but this time I didn't get a travel card, just a return on the mainline train as I didn't need tube trains. This time I got an E ticket.

I actually asked at the station why I didn't get a paper ticket like before and they told me if you get a travel card theses cannot be obtained as an E ticket....only a mainline train ticket.

Plus as you're travelling on a bank holiday, there are no peak/off peak trains so that's why it doesn't say open return (even though you ticked the box)

AnathemaPulsifer · 30/04/2023 17:34

You need to get your terminology straight or you’re going to make an expensive mistake on a future trip:

Day return: there and back the same day
Open return: there and back on different days (within one month I think)
Travelcard: there and back the same day plus all travel round London by bus and tube
