Just done a random blood sugar test and it’s 18.6, the chart says dangerous

My DH and I were messing about and we used a blood sugar test kit and it says my sugar level is 18.6 and that is it dangerous.

I think it’s because I’ve just eaten a huge fudge donut but DH says it still would not be that high even with the cake. I have not ever had blood sugar problems in the past, so is this a blip or do I need to do anything?

I will test it again tomorrow, but I don’t really want to bother the doctors if it’s just about eating a cake!

thank you in advance!

Did you wash your hands before doing the test? If you have sugar on your hands that could affect the reading.

Do it again in two hours and four hours. If you come down to normal reasonably quickly then your body is doing what it's supposed to to cope with a sugar rush. If it stays high, then you should consider seeing your gp.

Jaxhog · 30/04/2023 13:03

That is very high, even after eating a donut! Check it again first thing in the morning, before you've eaten anything. If it's over 7, call your GP for a full check.

(I have Diabetes, and speak from experience)

I was going to say same as pp - did you wash your hands thoroughly first?

Call your GP and get a check, can’t do any harm.

Jaxhog · 30/04/2023 13:05

Good point about washing hands first.

HurdyGurdy19 · 30/04/2023 13:08

My daughter (Type 1 diabetes) is told to aim for blood sugar readings of between 5 and 9.

Many factors affect it. For example, hot weather always sends her sugar levels high.

Agree with those saying wash your hands first.

x2boys · 30/04/2023 13:10

My son has recently been diagnosed with diabetes he's insulin dependent,he collapsed at home with diabetic Ketoneacidosis which is life threatening his blood sugars couldn't be read they were so high ,but yours armuch higher than they should be I think 5-8 is a normal reading ,I would be getting it checked out asap.

tiredhadenough · 30/04/2023 13:15

I'd wait 10 mins and wash hands before rechecking rather than rushing to a&e!!

FatGirlSwim · 30/04/2023 13:22

Wash your hands and recheck. But even if it comes down, see your gp and ask for an hba1c. Blood sugar won’t go that high in non diabetic people no matter what you eat.

If it doesn’t come down and stays that high two hours after eating, you do need a trip to hospital.

Do you have any diabetes symptoms?

Vanillaradio · 30/04/2023 13:24

As a type 1 diabetic- if it really is that high chances are you are diabetic. I would expect a donut to raise blood sugar but not that much if you have a working pancreas. Have you had any other symptoms lately- tired, thirsty, needing toilet, losing weight?
I would suggest- don't leave it till tomorrow. Wash your hands and check again now, then if still high give it 2 hours and check again. Untreated type 1 diabetes can kill you very quickly so if it is still high at that point get medical help.

BeanieA · 30/04/2023 13:25

Thank you for all the responses. I have to admit, after reading up on symptoms, I am often tired and do feel very thirsty. I will do as you guys say, monitor then test again. Thank you so much folks!

Yes, wash your hands and do the test again. Getting into the high teens for readings is worrying. If you can also test yourself after you have eaten your evening meal. You then have 3 readings to consider if you have raised levels.

BrutusMcDogface · 30/04/2023 13:48

Wow, that is very high. I would recheck soon.

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 30/04/2023 13:48

Wash your hands and test again now. Then again this evening and tomorrow morning. No point in waiting to test and finding out more information and getting help. Normal peoples blood sugar doesn’t spike that high even if eating fudge, we manage it with insulin surges.

Absolutely agree. Ignore everyone saying to retest tomorrow. Wash hands and recheck and then again in a few hours etc.

ProseccoOnIce · 30/04/2023 13:51

I'd advise you to wash your hands just now & re-test.

And I'd also check first thing tomorrow morning.

Blood glucose monitoring is not as accurate as a proper blood test, but you will want to have proper GP tests if the next 2 tests are above normal non-diabetes ranges.
