Ugh. Sat in the car park, 15 mins til my induction. Shitting it. I’m a fat lass, so unfit. But I need this time for me, time to get fitter, shift some timber.
But I’m scared! My stomachs all butterflies!

I hope it goes well!

Butterflies can mean excitement too 😊

Tayegete · 30/04/2023 11:51

I was exactly the same, you will be fine. People are only focussed on themselves and their workout. Soon you’ll just go in with your headphones on and won’t even think about it.

Want2beme · 30/04/2023 11:54

You'll feel great afterwards, like you've overcome your fear. People in the gym are normally very welcoming and will know you're feeling nervous.

Go for it and let us know how it was👍

You'll be so proud of yourself and full of happy hormones when you're finished. No one ever regrets an exercise session.

cocksstrideintheevening · 30/04/2023 11:57

I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Good on you for going

MudLady · 30/04/2023 11:58

My tip - as a former fit person who's only just starting to get back to the gym after about a decade of being pretty unfit (overweight/obese for most of that time) - don't push yourself too hard at first. You'll end up achey, sore and discouraged, & it will take a week to feel like you can go back. Little and often is better. Good regular habits are much better than the occasional blast.

Lottapianos · 30/04/2023 12:01

'Little and often is better. Good regular habits are much better than the occasional blast.'

Great advice. And it can all feel a bit shit at first. You may not be buzzing with endorphins immediately. This is NORMAL. Stick with it and life will start to get much better

yellowsmileyface · 30/04/2023 12:50

I've been there. I started going to the gym earlier this year. I'd been meaning to for ages and it took so long to work up the courage as I felt so outside my comfort zone.

I got over that pretty quickly and now I love my gym time. It's proper me time. I find it therapeutic, and I always feel great after a gym session, even if it was a light one.

Agree with other pp to start slow and go easy on yourself. Remember that even 5 minutes of movement is better than nothing at all.

Also remember that no one is paying attention to you, I promise. Everyone is in their own world, doing their own thing, not taking notice of other people.

Good luck!

MonkeyPuddle · 30/04/2023 13:08

I did it! Woop! Ah thank you for being lovely.
The PT was brilliant, told him I was scared and completely unfit, he was so reassuring.
We went through 5 weight machines, and 4 cardio.
Hes written me a plan and I’m to come back to him in 2 weeks to adjust.
He did warn me that I’d feel sore and achey but that I should feel
proud that I’ve done this.
There we’re people of every size and age which was reassuring for me to see.
This feels like proper me time, which I’m sorely needing.

Ah that's wonderful! Well done!! 😁
The first time is the hardest, it gets easier from here.

MonkeyPuddle · 30/04/2023 13:30

Thanks lovely, had a lovely shower and feeling all proud of myself 😂

Brilliant! You can put your fear to one side nowBrew

Lottapianos · 30/04/2023 17:29

Sounds brilliant, well done! Good idea to be honest with him about how you're feeling so he was able to reassure you

Stick with it. Some days will be great, some days will be awful, like anything else in life. STICK WITH IT

MudLady · 01/05/2023 06:33

Well done OP. I'm still in the stage of having to force myself to go, but it's been a couple of days since I last went & already I'm feeling like I need to go... weird. I know when I get there it'll feel like a massive slog, again, but it'll also feel like a massive achievement when I walk out at the end of the session.

Keep on pushing, you can do it!

Cooknook · 01/05/2023 06:35

Brilliant OP! The first step is often the hardest, glad you enjoyed it. I agree it's good for some me time, it becomes really encouraging as well as you find you can push yourself more and more.

Handsnotwands · 01/05/2023 06:58

You’ve inspired me. How did you go about arranging this? Did you pay extra for the Pt? And how much roughly did it cost?

id love to try a gym but scared / old / fat and haven’t ever been

vestanesta · 01/05/2023 07:53

Ahhhhh this was me a couple of weeks ago and now I'm really looking forward to going.

@Handsnotwands I joined a newly opening PureGym near me which is very cheap. They did an induction but no programme. However their app is good and has a load of programmes on there. They also do a lot of classes. They have a couple of PTs and I have my first session with mine tomorrow.

I do feel a bit achy but not dreadful which is good. Mine seems to be quite an evening gym (dh went for his induction at 8 and it was packed) so I plan my trips either for lunchtime in the week or teatime in a Sunday.
