Driving license arrived at my address but

It's for a random person.

We've just moved into a new build and there's 20 other houses so may be one of the neighbours but if it is I don't recognise them.

I'll let DVLA know but is there anything else to be aware of?

I'm thinking if anyone knocks and ask for it to say no and that I've returned it. As it's a new build it's not recognised on DVLA so you have to input the address manually.

And yes. I did open it even though it wasn't in our name Blush

Was it addressed to your house or put through the wrong door? As you've opened it, what address is printed on the licence itself - is it yours there? If they've used your address on your actual licence I'd send it straight back. If there's a mix up with the house it's been sent to I'd be more inclined to wait a bit and see if the owner materialises.

I have just reported getting health visitor letters to my house for a child that doesn’t live here, l only rang after l received 3 though and Yes l opened them all, there’s a similar named street two towns over, but l haven’t got time to go there and l do think they would use the same health visitor team. I get the impression the child is about 2 years old, it will just be human error.

Hm. I had a driver's license arrive at my new rented property once. It was for a guy who had agreed to rent before we did, but who mysteriously disappeared after paying his deposit.

Cue four years of solicitors letters & baliff cards. It was very interesting seeing what he got up to - he rented a car & nicked it at one point. The child support demands made me sad though (I'm unapologetic about opening them, after the baliff cards started).

Not saying this will happen to you, and no idea how it worked but clearly this guy had got some kind of ID from the lease agreement and applying for a DVLA license gave him something he could use? We had an outside mailbox rather than a letterbox which might have played a part - have you?

No outside postbox.

I'm hoping it's an honest mistake but not too sure if it is tbh.

I’ve had this. I ended up writing to the DVLA to say that I’d lived in the house for x years and no such person was there. I got a response to say that, unfortunately, there’s nothing they can do about randoms saying that they live at my address. So every now and then I return the DVLA letter “unknown at this address”.

Urban769 · 29/04/2023 17:19

Write
"Return to sender - Unknown at this address"

Place in mailbox

DiscoBeat · 29/04/2023 17:24

I'd send it back. Although they may send it again. I had a DL sent to me - my full name but the DOB and address on the actual licence wrong. They wouldn't accept that it was someone else's so after getting it 3 times altogether I posted it on to the address on the actual licence.

JanglyBeads · 29/04/2023 17:27

I've had one as well! They were v unhelpful when I tried ringing DVLA!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 29/04/2023 17:28

My workplace gets randoms claiming they live there. It’s a Prep school, but staff do live there. I’ve been there long enough to know who has lived there in the past too. It gets sent back straight away.

It might be worth checking with the developer/builders and asking whether the plot numbers are different from the house numbers allocated. I distantly remember buying my first home while it was under construction and the house number, when we got it, was different from the number on the plans for the new estate.

They might also be able to find out whether the person named on the licence is somebody who has also moved in recently into another property.

This! I live in a new build and my plot number was 4 but house number 51!

Ariela · 30/04/2023 09:47

@Garrie you may find the new licence owner has used the builders plot number in error. Each new estate, the builder gives them plot numbers prior to building. When the road is complete and the council take over, then the official road name and numbers apply. Quite easy to get this wrong, so I suggest look on the builders plan and go see the owner of that plot number = your house number in first instance.

Send it back, unless you want to ring DVLA (but they're probably useless). It can be their mix-up. Are you registered with something like Credit Karma to check your credit score etc?

User8907 · 30/04/2023 10:13

Credit Karma is free, meant to add. Def recommend it.
