Why wouldn't I want my receipt?

Lorrymum · 29/04/2023 12:20

I've recently noticed that every time I buy something Im asked if I want the receipt. I always feel a bit awkward when I say "yes please" and it feels as though Im being a bit of a pain.
Why wouldn't I want it? How would I return something if I don't have one? Is it to save paper or ink?

Problem is receipts aren't useful till they are needed.

They get needed when you get stopped - as quickest way to show have paid for goods - and they get needed when returning items to prove you bought it from them.

I once watch FIL argue for over 15 minuets that an items was bought from that shop with cash so no statement to print out but with no receipt they wouldn't accept that as other shops sold that item- many bigger retailers don't always require the receipt or there may be packaging showing it's from that shop but not having one can be an issue sometimes.

diflasu · 29/04/2023 12:56

I have encountered e-mail receipts and do like those but it's been from very small sellers so far.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/04/2023 12:57

I keep them until I've received my bank statement and checked it.

I always request receipts even in places like Costa or Greggs as I scanning them into my apps to get money back. So yes please.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/04/2023 12:58

It’s to save paper and ink and rubbish. I often don’t want one, unless I need it for expenses or am very likely to return. I pay for everything electronically so if there was an issue I’d have proof.

Nachobowls · 29/04/2023 12:58

Yes I hate this. I always take them incase I'm stopped by security and have nothing to show will be pretty embarrassing having to go back escorted back by security!

CatsKittensCloud · 29/04/2023 12:59

I agree, but definitely want a receipt for fuel, and I would advise you to ask for one for each transaction

The thing that really annoys me, is people keying in a figure they’ve told you, but not showing you the amount they’ve keyed in, and also not being able to check that the prices do come up correctly, I’ve been over charged for items lots of times, but in smaller shops, you just can’t check.

I’m absolutely sick of this, and I don’t trust people theses days.

Also once last week, I twice had my card “declined” at a takeaway, I still couldn’t see how much she had keyed in, and was given no receipt for these failed attempts when I asked for them, so I paid with cash.

I had plenty of money in my account, so there was no reason for the failure.

Nothing helps you keep a track of your money

DappledThings · 29/04/2023 13:01

I find it's the other way. Receipts thrust into my hand when I don't want them. I often just pick my change or item out and leave the receipt and the shop person looks surprised.

Why would I want a receipt for 2 birthday cards, or a pack of 5 bobbles, or a toothbrush or any number or other small items that will never be returned?

mydogisthebest · 29/04/2023 13:02

I always want receipts as I scan them into the Amazon shopper app and get amazon vouchers. I also have 2 other apps that award me for scanning receipts

ThierryEnnui · 29/04/2023 13:05

Why do people get receipts for fuel out of interest? Worried I’m missing something now 😂

itsmylife7 · 29/04/2023 13:06

Don't know if it's all sainsburys but you need the receipt to access the barrier to open at self service tills, after you've paid.

Lilbunnyfufu · 29/04/2023 13:07

I always take the receipt now after being stopped by security in the supermarket. It was bloody embarrassing not having a receipt and being taken through to the back offices until the security guy checked the CCTV to prove I'd paid.

The ability to claim back the VAT if it is for business use.

tailinthejam · 29/04/2023 13:10

As well as for clothing and electricals that might need to be returned, I take the receipt for food items as well. All too often I opened something, found it was off, and wanted to take it back to the supermarket, and then realised I haven't got the receipt. Learned my lesson.

Most other stuff, I don't bother. DH always takes the receipts as he is self-employed so can claim some things back on expenses.

FictionalCharacter · 29/04/2023 13:11

The stupidest thing is when they ask you if they want it, but they’ve already printed it so if you say no they put it in the bin. So it doesn’t save paper and ink at all, and at least if I dispose of it at home I put it in recycling.
I always take receipts, seen too many stories of people being accused of not paying.

Most receipts can't be recycled - they use coated paper or thermal paper.

They are a waste of paper. But mostly it is because the plasticy coating and the printer toner that is heated and sprayed onto them contains some very nasty carcinogenic and hormone altering chemicals. I don't really want BPA all over my hands tbh.

Receipt printers don’t normally use toner though I don’t think?

Receipt printers don’t use toner or ink but the poster is correct about the high levels of BPA, which is an endocrine disrupter. For that reason I touch them as little as possible and don’t give them to my children to hold.

My car is under my Husband's company as I'm the company secretary so it's to give to the accountants 😊

Jolenetookmyman · 29/04/2023 13:26

I take every receipt even for a pint of milk. I have 3 receipt scanning cashback apps that pay out every few months.

Wherethewildthymeblows · 29/04/2023 13:27

I rarely take them. I used to and then checked them off against my bank statement every month but in these days of internet banking and banking apps, theres no need any more. Likewise, I dont worry about being stopped by security. I could easily show the transaction on my banking app.

TheChosenTwo · 29/04/2023 13:28

Dh takes receipts for fuel to give to the accountant. I take one sometimes if I use self service at the supermarket (rare, less than once a month) but other than that, no I don’t get receipts. Mainly order clothes online anyway so don’t get traditional paper receipts much at all really.
They really piss me off anyway, stupid little scrappy bits of paper fluttering about in my bag or in a coat pocket.

Clymene · 29/04/2023 13:32

You don't need receipts if you're using your company card. My accountant isn't interested in seeing them. What else am I going to be spending £86 on in Esso?

UsingChangeofName · 29/04/2023 13:32

Back in the day when cash was king, it was your only proof of purchase, but now, as most people pay for most things with cards, which is traceable, it makes receipts a bit pointless for most everyday purchases. The 'evidence' is already there.
(I still would for a big / expensive purchase or something electrical which might go wrong, but that is probably my own insecurity and probably a lot less needed now than they used to be).

That's interesting- is it from any store ? What's the App? I'm normally a no receipt person but I didn't realise you could get money back from them
