Apparently you "shouldn't walk a dog if you don't want other dogs to say hello"

I've posted similar before and I know I'll get the dog rights vigilante posters but I'm so fucking angry.

Walking along a footpath by houses with my dog on the lead. A larger dog comes bounding up with no owner in sight, snarling, clawing and jumping on my dog so I end up picking her up.

Dog owner appears and I ask the owner to call the dog off. Dog doesn't respond and is clawing at my legs. I tell the owner that he shouldn't have the dog off lead if he can't control it. He says the dog isn't doing any harm, he just wants to say hello. I said that my dog clearly didn't want it to so can you call your dog off. He tells me that he can do what he likes with his dog and that I'm a miserable cow. He finally catches the dog and calls me a stupid bitch.

And this is why retrospective dog laws won't matter. There needs to be checks/training/license from day one. Make it hard for people like this to get dogs in the first place. I'm so sick of not being able to go fucking anywhere without a "friendly" dog inviting itself. When will this end?!

My dog is usually lovely but hates other dogs being in her face. She’s a collie and it’s known collies can be aloof. She’s fine with walking past them but if they get to close she can bare her teeth.

one time I was in the park and there was a boisterous dog approach her. I could tell she didn’t like it so put her on the lead to move her. The other owner was well pissed off, accused me of not socialising my dog properly and his dog was being friendly. I explained I knew my dog more than him, she was unhappy in the situation and basically mind his own damn business!

Willmafrockfit · 29/04/2023 11:15

oh similar happened to me
some idiot woman with 3 dogs, larger than mine, i put mine on a lead and her dogs were right up close.
i told them to shoo
she didnt like it and said i shouldnt walk my dog there

i was so annoyed
what an idiot!

Shopper727 · 29/04/2023 11:15

Least you can pick yours up my golden retriever is a bit big, I tell folk to get their dogs away from mine he’s walking on lead for a reason I don’t want other peoples dogs distracting him or upsetting him

It always makes me laugh over how offended people get over their dogs!

That man is probably a nasty bastard in all aspects of his life, especially when being challenged by a woman.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 29/04/2023 11:16

You should have run up to him, thrown your arms around him and repeatedly kissed him
Just being friendly...

Willmafrockfit · 29/04/2023 11:17

mine snarls and snaps, as long as there arent more than 1, in which case she is totally outnumbered.
she tells them to keep away.

tailinthejam · 29/04/2023 11:18

The same seems to apply if you are just out for a walk and don't even have a dog.

You are supposed to either be ecstatic that someone else's dog is coming at you wanting a fuss, or if not, then you're a nasty dog-hating person and shouldn't be going for a walk anywhere remotely considered to be dog-walking territory.

Softoprider · 29/04/2023 11:19

Rule number one. Do not pick your dog up. It will only make the offending animal worse but as a dog owner you knew that anyway

SauvignonBlanche · 29/04/2023 11:19

We adopted a 13yr old JRT who hated other dogs and always snapped at them, she was also deaf with poor recall, consequently I always walked her on lead.

I’d always kept my previous well behaved dog away from dogs on a lead assuming they were on a lead for a reason, it came as a shock when so few other people respected this when I walked the next dog.

Changingplace · 29/04/2023 11:21

The man was an idiot! My dog is skittish around other dogs and I’d rather keep him away from them because I know my dog, I’ve had similar situations with idiots who have no concept of keeping their own animals under control.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 29/04/2023 11:21

@tailinthejam absolutely! At least if you’re a dog owner you understand a little about dogs - I’ve never owned a dog and am quite wary of them but now run a gauntlet of the poorly trained buggers in my local park and I’m so sick of it. Immensely glad I don’t have small children anymore to have to navigate around their “friendly” dogs either 🤬.

Clymene · 29/04/2023 11:22

I had this yesterday. Apparently my (on lead) dog should be muzzled because her (off lead) dog is friendly and my dog didn't appreciate it bounding up into his face and growled.

Honestly there really are some utter fuckwit dog owners

LightDrizzle · 29/04/2023 11:23

No longer a dog owner sadly but I wholeheartedly agree.

RestingMurderousFace · 29/04/2023 11:24

Happens nearly everyday here. I’ve just started to shout aggressively at the oncoming arsehole dog to warn it off. The owners don’t look too pleased but I’m past the point of caring at this stage.

ChypreNovice · 29/04/2023 11:24

Rude dogs with idiot owners have been the bane of my 13 dog-owning years.

My old girls hates rude dogs all up in her face so I now make a big fucking show of moving her right out of the way of on coming off lead dogs. Even then people don’t get it and I invariably end up get abuse or eye rolls when I have to request owners put their dogs on a lead to keep them away from mine.

My dog is not there for your dog’s socialisation/pleasure, and my dog walk time which is meant to be pleasant and relaxing does not involve a commitment to stop and interact with every dog, on or off, lead that is allowed to do whatever the fuck it wants by ignorant indulgent owners.

Willmafrockfit · 29/04/2023 11:25

dogs should be able to read each other's body language - ideally, and stay away from certain dogs.
but young dogs do not

LolaSmiles · 29/04/2023 11:29

I've come to the conclusion that even checks at purchasing wouldn't stop people being like this with their dogs because it's about their personality as a human. They will probably behave the same in other situations too, not just regarding their dog.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 29/04/2023 11:45

Carry tear gas. Or if that is illegal where you are, a spray bottle of clorox, vinegar, or skunk scent. Use it on the "friendly" dog or their stupid owners. Your choice.

QuickGuide · 29/04/2023 11:57

I agree with you, but I have a friend who has a big bouncy dog who likes to say hello. Dog is very cute and friendly and does actuallynhave decebt recall when it's used, but she's made it onto the local FB page because another owner objected to her dog approaching his which was on a lead.

Pages of people saying she should have her dog under control and it shouldn't be approaching dogs on leads, but she won't have it. It's her dog's right to "talk" to others and if yours doesn't want to you shouldn't take it out.

pfftt · 29/04/2023 12:08

So wishing a dog to leave you alone makes you wrong but calling someone a bitch is ok.

Doesn't surprise anyone that the dog was out of control really.

I had a tiny dog. I would pick him up. One bite from a big dog would kill it. I know 4 or 5 people who have had their smaller dogs savaged whilst out on walks. They were all small dogs but bigger than mine was.

Thesharkradar · 29/04/2023 12:12

Sick to death of off-lead dogs running about all over the place getting in everyone's way
Ditto extendable leads
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

cocksstrideintheevening · 29/04/2023 12:15

If your dog hasn't got excellent recall every time it shouldn't be off lead.

My dog is blind and deaf. He gets walked on lead with warning jacket etc he's so friendly but terrified when a dog bounds up to him and has no idea.

I would and have kicked off 'friendly' dogs and pick up mine.

HotPenguin · 29/04/2023 12:17

I was bitten by a dog on an extendable lead the other day. Didn't draw blood but it hurt and it was through jeans. The dog ran at me barking before it bit and the owner just let it.
