Menopause supplement?

confusedofengland · 29/04/2023 10:01

Can anybody recommend menopause supplements to try please?

I think I am peri-menopausal as still having regular periods. But experiencing various symptoms such as heavier periods/clotting, mood swings, broken sleep & brain fog. And probably more.

I want to try vitamins/supplements before I think about HRT.

Any recommendations please? On a tight budget, but will find the money if I have to, within reason.

£19 a month on subscription (I use their multi vitamins and it's easy to pause/cancel etc)

Sort out your diet first. It's boring, but cutting right down on sugar (including alcohol), caffeine and processed food can have a big impact. It's what I did.

Read this book for more information:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hormone-Intelligence-Complete-Balanced-Hormones/dp/
Also, natural light in the morning (go for a daily walk), and lifting weights plus stress management through something like yoga and meditation are a good idea - download the Insight Timer app which is free/donation based.

I bought second hand hand weights from Facebook and follow a few YouTubers like Caroline Girvan.

After all of that, I do take some supplements (a bit haphazardly, they seem to be most effective in the winter) but it's best to work out from the book what would give you most bang for your buck as everyone 's needs vary. Introducing one supplement at a time and monitoring if it's effective will be most cost-effective.

My own daily personal plan which meant I never needed HRT (but still had horrific periods, not gonna lie):

3000mg Evening Primrose oil
High strength vitamin B - I use Tesco, any will do.
1000mg Vit C soluble
And a multivitamin/mineral. Again I use Tesco's.

Some people try Black Cohosh - but just because it is natural doesn't mean it is any better than any other HRT (arsenic is natural).

I found my regime to be totally effective in that I had no other symptoms, and my goodness, menopause is a blessing! No more periods!

For the heavy periods, I used a mooncup (other menstrual cups are available), which held much more than the most super of tampons, plus a sanitary towel. If I still had periods, I'd now use period pants as a menstrual cup backup.

I've been taking Vitabiotics well woman plus. It's got pretty much everything in so one of them might work!

It seems to help joint pain a lot. Not sure about the rest.

The other natural fix I found was going low carb and no sugar. Gutting as I have a very sweet tooth but I notice the hot flushes / night sweats are worse when I don't do this.
