Did you know this about baby bath seats?

I had no idea they were implicated in so many accidents. We never had one but I don’t know if I’d have thought to look something like this up.

This is an absolutely tragic case.

I doubt very much that anyone on this thread can blame these poor parents for their inattention even a tiniest fraction of the amount that they must be blaming themselves.

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2023 21:31

It's not the chair, it was the fact it was used inappropriately by the adult using it.
It has been drummed into parents for over 30 yrs or more to not leave children unattended in water and these chairs have warnings on the packaging that they need to be used with supervision.

I feel very sorry for the family but it is also the parent at fault.

Anyone who leaves a baby unattended in water is an idiot. The bath seat is nothing to do with it, lack of common sense is

I agree with the PPs. We had a bath seat with DD1 and it was useful as it gave her a bit more stability so you didn't have to be literally holding her, but it had a warning to never leave unattended printed in big block letters on the seat itself.

It's the same with fucking floatation aids I. Polls. This padded vests...the rubber rings etc.

Bin the fucking lot of them and hold onto your child, or have them with noodles only within arm's reach, and instill in your child you never enter the water without an adult etc.

It is extremely sad, but no parent should ever leave a baby or toddler in the bath alone, even if it's just to pop out to another room for 2 minutes to get something.

Strawberrydelight78 · 02/05/2023 21:41

I've just seen this case on Facebook. It's just common sense to never leave them alone. I had a bath slide for both mine as newborns. Which was great that it held they're head above the water and I had my hands free. I never left them alone even for a second. Just have to be prepared have everything to hand. We also had a baby seat with sucker's on from Argos for DD. I used the same seat for DS a few years ago was fine the first few times. But one time the sucker's came away and DS tipped forward while I washed DD hair. Luckily I had him in sight at all times and was there to sit him up. He was about 7 months by then. He was absolutely fine. The seat went in the bin and I got a non slip bath mat for the bath.

It’s always so tragic when these things occur.

But again, it’s not the fault of the product. No small child should ever be left in water. I’ve had instances where the door has gone or the phone has rung.

I’ve either ignored it or scooped the child up in a towel and taken them with me. I never leave the room even for a second, for anything.

newjobnewstartihope · 02/05/2023 22:11

Yes I'm sure the parents are blaming themselves now but at the end of the day how many kids lives need to be lost due to parents 'not thinking'
And it's always 'just half a minute' they were gone for

There was a case local to me when my daughter was a baby. She said she collapsed in the bath. But autopsy showed she had been under water a few minutes. It came out in court she left the baby left in bath seat 3 year old at tap end with shower running because the 3 year old liked it. She went to get some towels then answer the phone downstairs, as well as put the rubbish out and collect the post from the door. When she eventually got back to her children with the bath filling up. The seat with the baby in had tipped over. She ran outside with them both in a towel left toddler with a neighbour while another neighbour took the baby to a nearby health centre. She admitted it wasn't the first time she had left them in the bath. But that time she was unlucky.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/05/2023 07:51

Bath seats made my life so much easier when my twins were little, as the seats made it possible to bath them both at once.

They're "extra hands" though, not a replacement for being with them in the bathroom, kneeling on the floor.

MrsMamaMay · 11/12/2023 08:49

Baby bath seats are perfect for any baby that wishes to sit up in the bath. But I would never leave them unattended
