Does anyone recognise this book?

Apologies for the vagueness of this post it’s been driving me mad for days and google is no help.

the plot is about two sisters who have a funny relationship. One has mental health problems/maybe an eating disorder. She is put in an institution of some sort against her wishes and eventually breaks out. That’s all I recall except I think the ending is thoroughly depressing. Possibly she kills herself.

I believe the author also wrote a book about someone or again maybe sisters who possibly inherit a house or apartment that has a ghost. The ghost eventually takes over one of the inhabitants.

id love to re read them but need to find them first! The author is female I think. Help 🤪

I actually think I remember reading the first book, but can't remember the title. Was it an American setting, and involved a library that one of them worked in?

Ridingthegravytrain · 27/04/2023 19:36

Yes it was American I think, but I don’t recall a library. That’s not to say it wasn’t in it though

No it’s not that. That came up in my frantic googling earlier. But thank you for looking.

I feel it may be called the “something” sisters though

Ok, that's the one I read. Oh well, it's all bump fodder!

ThisSingleMama · 27/04/2023 19:45

Is there a book/reading section on mumsnet?

SummerLightning · 27/04/2023 19:49

"the feast of all saints" by Anne rice? I haven't read it but I asked chatgpt who solved a similar search of mine the other day and this

SummerLightning · 27/04/2023 19:50

..is what it suggested

heldinadream · 27/04/2023 19:55

Helen Dunmore wrote a novel about a woman with an eating disorder and I'm sure it had a sister theme too. She wasn't American (she died a few years ago).
Hang on I'll look it up.

TippyHaha · 27/04/2023 19:57

'Her Fearful Symmetry' by Audrey Niffenegger is the book about sisters inheriting a house in Hampstead and one sister being haunted. Not read any of her other books though.

heldinadream · 27/04/2023 20:04

Can't work out which Helen Dunmore it could be, sorry. She's worth looking at though, but it looks as though pp might have nailed it with Audrey Niffeneger.

GhostBridezilla · 27/04/2023 20:54

Yes her fearful symmetry and then there was a flow up book that I long awaited but it was a bit meh.

Thisismyluckyday · 27/04/2023 21:12

The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O’Farrell? It’s been a long time since I read it and I don’t think it quite fits but that’s what popped into my head.

Agree with all the posters who suggested Her Fearful Symmetry for the second book.

Ridingthegravytrain · 27/04/2023 22:13

Yes thank you her fearful symmetry was it and a really good book. I obviously got confused as it wasn’t the same author. I’ve finally found the book, it’s called the story sisters by Alice Hoffman. I recommend it If anyone is feeling a bit too chipper at the moment and is looking for something to bring them down 😂
