DD accidentally fed week old pasta

Panicking! So my dad looked after DD today whilst I was at work. For her lunch he heated up some pasta and tomato sauce that was in the fridge. I initially thought I made it 3 days ago so it was fine. But I've now realised I actually made it last Thursday/Friday 😬😬😬 I meant to chuck it last night but completely forgot.

It was heated to piping in the microwave, didn't smell or look off but I'm now completely terrified DD will get food poisoning. 😞 For the record I'm not angry at my dad, he didn't know.

Haha no, luckily DD is 4, not a week old. I can see how badly written the title is now though 😂

From your title I thought you meant he fed a 1 week old baby pasta!!!

Feeding a child who is meant to have solid food pasta that’s a week old will probably be fine.

I thought the same!

I'm sure your daughter will be fine, op.

It’ll be fine, honestly don’t worry. People are too over cautious on MN!

Christ on a bike. Really? What kind of food??

Refridgerated stuff like pasta, lentils. Not rice, I have limits

How old do you think meals in supermarkets are?

Most will be at least a week old by the time they are eaten if not older.

EarlGreyAndCucumber · 28/04/2023 08:03

For all those saying it is fine because there is no meat in it, that is not correct. Pasta can be contaminated by bacillus cereus, the same as rice. I wouldn’t panic, but I’d keep an eye out for any signs of food poisoning, and if she does start looking off colour, mention it to a medical professional.

But you're not comparing like with like.

Ready meals are treated, stored in airtight packaging and are full of preservatives to make sure they don't go off. Home-cooked meals in Tupperware or a bowl covered in cling film don't go through the same processes.

That's why (for example) the pizzas made fresh on a pizza counter only have a shelf life of a day or two, whereas the pre-packed ones in boxes can last a week or more.

My italian mother in law makes a huge vat of chicken pasta sauce once a week and leaves it on the hob for lunch everyday.

All week. It never sees a fridge. Just sits on the hob being reheated.

Sometimes, she will put penne in it too and leave it on the hob all week. By day 6, the pasta is a mushed up mess from being reheated once or twice a day in the pan, but they still eat it.

She did this throughout dh childhood, every week. On a sunday, it would be 7 day old, repeatedly reheated chicken and pasta for lunch that had never seen a fridge. Even in the height of summer. Mmmmm, yummy.

I don’t know how someone hasn’t got very sick and I don’t let my children go there unsupervised as she once tried to feed it to my then 12 month old baby despite me telling her what would happen if she tried to.

They are all still alive. Your dd will be okay.

Thank you all. It's now been over 24 hours and she's still absolutely fine so I'm not panicking quite so much.
