You need some colour, and some pictures on the walls. I would also turn the bed around to face the windows, and not have it shoved in the corner. Have space either side of it.

Yes I was thinking about either swapping it to where the drawers are and putting it more central on the wall and maybe bedside table each side . Or as you say facing the window. And I was thinking of a feature wall . But I do what wall paper I want or what to do with the other walls

Start with easy things. Turn your bed round feet to the window, not pressed against the wall.

Put up a light shade, a cheap paper globe will be better than the bare bulb.

Get some bedside tables and lamps, one on each side.

Clear out the clutter and create a dressing table area with a seat and a mirror where you can do your hair/makeup/skin routine.

Think about the colours you would like in there. Add cushions for the bed and a rug. The rug would need to be large and preferably go under part of your bed.

Lastly you need something on your walls. Large framed black and white prints if you're not confident picking art generally.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/04/2023 12:34

If you do a feature wall, then pick one of the colours from that for your other walls. It seems a bright room, so you could potentially go quite bright or dark without issue. It depends on your style.

cantkeepupwiththejoneses · 27/04/2023 12:34

I love your windows. Take advantage of the light and get some house plants along those ledges. Some green always breathes life into a room!

Feature wall behind the bed is good, and just paint on the others is fine. Why not have a browse on Pintrest for bedroom inspo?

GlamGiraffe · 27/04/2023 12:34

Light fitting( not a shade but a v proper hanging light fitting)
Reposition bed so it is in the wall facing the window with space on either side for a small bedside unit
Large Picture on wall where bead head currently is
Nice oversized mirror on wall at chest of drawers end
Are curtains that colour deliberately? They look like they are accidental.
Replace with curtains which go all the way down to the floor( and preferably pool slightly in the floor)
A small chair with arms( not full on arm chair) between the read and window facing out makes a nice reading spot of it fits
Hints of colour would be beneficial, what sort of colours do you like?

Inthemiddleofthenightdu · 27/04/2023 12:36

What's your budget?

No budget:
Change the radiators to traditional column ones. They make such a difference.
Put shutters in the windows
Change the flooring to wood
Paint the walls

Mid-budget:
Put in some roller blinds with curtains that reach the floor (yours are dangling off the floor). Get some nice cotton or velvet ones not the silky material you have. Change the curtain poles to brass.
Change the carpet to a fresher carpet
Paint the walls

Small budget:
Paint the walls
Put a rug over your carpet

  • as someone else said change the orientation of your bed.
  • I think due to the size of your room you could pick a fun, dark colour like Hague Blue from Farrow&Ball or go for a Scandinavian type look with white and minimalist colours.
  • change all your furniture to wood, either oak or a dark wood.
  • get some artwork on the walls, you have big walls so can get away with big statement pieces.
  • get bedside tables
Get some throws and cushions for the bed
allisgood47 · 27/04/2023 12:49

Sorry I should have said its council so I can't do things like take radiators off . I'm just going to easy properly

I'd try to zone it a bit. Have you bed facing the windows with bedside units and lamps in the space nearest the radiator. A picture shelf over the bed would look good,

Get wardrobes for the area near the door and a dressing table for in the corner. A nice light fittings or shade. If you're allowed to paint chose colours you like and find pictures that compliment your chosen colour scheme.

allisgood47 · 27/04/2023 13:07

Ok with the curtains the the widow's are really long and wide . Then I have a bit of a wall that's about 2 foot wide . Then I have another long window . So I have to buy 2x sets of curtains. Going to actual floor length made them even more expensive abd just can't afford it.

I definitely can't get rid of any furniture. I have only had it for a year . So I need to work with what I have. But I can definitely add things.

Definitely no mirrors on the bedroom I really don't want to be seeing my self. Some sort or wall art may be an idea.

I will definitely face my bed to the window . As most seem to hace suggested it

What direction does your room face. Whatever colours you like, bear in mind that they are affected by the direction of light that comes into the room - so definitely worth doing testers before committing to a colour.

Hard agree on moving the bed as others have suggested.

CatOnTheChair · 27/04/2023 14:12

Is start by moving the bed, and getting 2 bedside tables and lamps.
A shade for the bulb (although I'd be interested in the light fittings @GlamGiraffe would suggest).

Once you've done that - and ideally moved the stuff on either side of the drawers - you can start thinking about decorating a wall, art work and/or a rug.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/04/2023 14:25

I like the curtains, I had a burgundy bedroom for some years. I still have burgundy bed linen in the winter.

I would start with a matching or toning bed cover and pillows .Joe Browns and Dunhelm have some exciting prints with these colours and green/ teal. Then you can take a colour for a wall behind the bed from there.

I would turn the bed round so it faces the window as others have said, and get a couple of bedside cabinets with lamps on . A shelf on the wall above the bed would be nice, with plants, etc on. Plants hanging from the ceiling always looks good too, and a nice big rug on the floor.

Pinterest in brilliant for inspiration

Do you have a wardrobe?

ManyRiversToCross · 27/04/2023 20:51

Something like this looks luxe, but really it's two very simple bedside tables, a painted wall, a duvet cover and rug that tone in, and a picture. You could achieve this (and it would go with your existing curtains) for under 200 quid.

Have a look on Pinterest too, they always have fab ideas.

YourWinter · 27/04/2023 21:01

If you have time to browse charity shops you can get fantastic bargains on curtains. Or put a ‘wanted’ notice on your local Facebook pages? People are always updating rooms and switching colour schemes (well not me, my bedroom curtains were included with a house I bought in 1987 and I brought them with me when I moved here in 1991 - I’ve never painted my bedroom because it matches those curtains from the last house!)

Thripp · 27/04/2023 21:03

Agree with all those who suggest moving the bed so it faces the window and has space on both sides. Given that you can't change the radiators or, presumably, the carpet, I'd start off with moving the bed, then think about painting (preferably forget about feature walls). A large rug would look good; ideally one which would cover most of the carpet (so your bed would stand on it too). I'd look in charity shops and on FB Marketplace/Ebay for curtains. They always look better if they are properly floor length or even a bit longer. I'd also change the curtain poles to ones which take curtains with header tape rather than eyelet - they just look nicer. Again, FB Marketplace/Freecycle/charity shops/ebay are your best bet. Ditto ceiling lampshade. You don't have to do it all at once - you can bide your time a bit once you've moved the bed and painted the walls, and you'll eventually find what you're looking for. If you go for white bed linen, it will go with everything and it always looks classy. The big windows are good, and it looks like a nice light room.

LER83 · 27/04/2023 21:06

A teal green would go nicely with the colour of the curtains. It's a great sized room with lovely windows. If your budget isn't huge keep an eye on Facebook selling sites and ebay. I've managed to get nice lamps and light fittings for not much on them. It's sad what you've said about not having mirrors, but you can position them so you don't catch yourself in them. I've got one above my drawer unit but its too high for me to see into, its more to bounce the light about! And def get a couple of tall plants for the window.

mathanxiety · 27/04/2023 22:08

Turn your bed around to face the windows.
Buy a small armchair or slipper chair to go in the space where the pile of stuff is now.
Get a bedside table and a lamp to go on it.
Get some pictures for the walls - don't hang them too high. You should be able to look directly at them.

FindingMeno · 27/04/2023 23:16

The windows are great- I would make a feature of them. Blinds, long voiles from the curtain poles, standing and hanging plants.
The bed needs to take up some of the floorspace and not be tucked away.
Look for a second hand mirror, as big as you can, and wall mount or prop against the wall.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 27/04/2023 23:25

I got some lovely curtains & poles recently. Brand new from ebay. Crushed velvet & lined. Beautiful rich colours. All under £40 per pair. They hang really nicely
Worth a browse.
Have also bookmarked a couple of nice rugs for around £70.
You said you are not keen on mirrors. But what about the "starburst" style? Adds interest & light but more "arty" than just mirror.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/04/2023 23:41

A nice wardrobe with lots of hanging space and bedside tables (buy narrow chests of drawers as they'll give you more storage space than tables or cabinets). A full length mirror to check yourself out once you're dressed. Blackout blinds if you're sleeping opposite a window. A chair for discarded clothes and a laundry hamper
I'd use paint rather than wallpaper as it's cheaper and can be freshened up. Hint - match paint colours to fabrics rather than vice versa using somewhere like a dulux decorator centre's mixing service.

ithinkicanithinkican · 27/04/2023 23:53

IKEA do nice long curtains in most of their styles, which can be cut and hemmed to the right length.
