I woke up 27 times last night

According to my fitbit. I have been having very disturbed sleep the past couple of weeks. I first noticed at Easter, the dc waking me at 6, me falling back to sleep then waking myself up snoring. This has progressed to happening through the night. I only usually snore if I've had a lot of wine.

This week I've been really aware of waking up briefly multiple times. I checked my fitbit. 5 "proper" wake ups, the 22 micro wake ups

What on earth could this be. ?

It does sound like sleep apnea and will go away when you lose weight. Do bear in mind that your reaction times will be reduced so you need to consider whether you are safe to drive (please read the regulations round this). There are two quick tools that might help work whether it’s likely to be OSA: Epworth Sleepiness Score and STOP BANG, download and have a look.

StopFeckingFaffing · 27/04/2023 08:23

I would use this as your motivation to lose weight, it is clearly affecting your health and the sleep problems will likely resolve if you can get closer to a healthy BMI

MayhemMostly · 27/04/2023 08:25

What do you weigh right now?

I'm 15 stone. I know at 12 stone most people would consider me overweight, but I look ok at that. I carry quite a lot of muscle under the blubber and believe it or not have an active lifestyle.

Do you mean this? This is mine from last night. I thought it was normal to wake during the night.

I think it's pretty normal to go through stages of better or worse sleep. It sounds like it's worrying you, so maybe take a look at your bedtime routine, exercise during the day and not using your phone or watching TV in bed.

15 stone is bloody horrendous. My sister is very overweight abd she does have sleep apnea. She has a lot of fat around her face, neck and abdomen. I dobt want that to be me

Bemyclementine · 27/04/2023 08:30

@VenusStarr yes, mine didn't used to do that, so I got a bit of a shock. But I only looked because I'd been waking up so much and being aware that I was waking if that makes sense.

I wake loads but I attribute that to perimenopause. Are you too young for that?

Bemyclementine · 27/04/2023 08:37

No, I'm 45.

Mine is the same - always more than 20 odd micro wakeups. I assumed it was logging turning over as a wakeup. I think it's normal?

Yes, you're right I think the fitbit data is normal, but my problem is that I have suddenly started actually waking myself up with a snort, not just a turnover, but a proper wake. I'm tired in the mornings, it's a new thing, and the reason why I checked the fitbit. The fitbit is a red herring really.

I think perimenopause can last many years before actual menopause. I’m 46 and definitely suffering symptoms as are many of my friends. The sleep disturbances in Peri are to do with hormones so tricky to manage. But if you have no other symptoms could well be something else.

I found sleep was the first thing to go though.

Delatron · 27/04/2023 08:47

If you’re waking with a snort then I’d investigate sleep apnea first though. I just wake randomly for no reason and feel wide awake.

Bemyclementine · 27/04/2023 16:43

I was awake for 1hr20 around 3am. I got a foam mattress wedge, and extra pillow abd slept much better after that with minimal "micro" wakes (only 1, until the time that I was ready to wake up when I had a few).

I'm tired today, I'm going to try the propped up position again tonight and hope for a better night's sleep.

I've also Made a food and exercise plan to lose weight /increase fitness going forward.

Really interesting to read this thread today as my sleep has been horrendous this past week.
We have new neighbours downstairs so initially thought they were disturbing me somehow but surely not several nights in a row, even with earplugs in?!
Does anyone know if peri-menopause related sleep problems can start very suddenly? I usually have a completely sleepless night the night before my period is due, but waking up in the early hours so frequently is a new thing.
Hope you start to sleep better soon, OP.

It nothing even Fitbit tell you it is very common to wake up briefly up 10 - 30 times a night

greyhairnomore · 27/04/2023 17:07

My Fitbit is never accurate. It says I'm asleep when I know I'm awake.

Bemyclementine · 27/04/2023 17:18

@hellesbells it's not nothing, I'm waking up, properly multiple times a night and am exhausted. I have said a couple if times now to ignore tge bit about the fitbit, it seems fitbit shows more data than it used to. Regardless, the reason I looked was because I am waking up so much.

Bemyclementine · 27/04/2023 17:19

@BonnieGlasses I don't know if it's peri related, apparently many women are being diagnosed with sleep apnoea in peri menopause.

This happened to me very suddenly when I became perimenopausal. Did not sleep for more than 20 mins at at time for four months and it disappeared with HRT. I stupidly put it down to Covid anxiety (began in first lockdown) and dismissed the hot flushes etc.
I know you are young for this but is it worth checking your hormone levels - mine were off the scale bad according to GP.
