Hair rollers in public

Say for arguments sake you had an event on Friday night that you wanted curly hair for, and also say for arguments sake that you have a toddler who needs exercising like a boxer puppy.. Would you feel comfortable going out to the park and such with your hair looking like the attached picture? If you saw someone in the park with their hair like that would you judge them or think I bet her hair is going to look nice tonight? The picture is definitely not me by the way

I’m from Liverpool and haven’t seen this in years 🙄

Saffronn · 26/04/2023 18:27

Liverpool on a Saturday during Labour Party conference last autumn was amazing to watch. The two tribes of glam local ladies in curlers + London (mostly) Labour activists in sensible shoes and no make up were as astonished as each other.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 26/04/2023 18:36

I wouldn't notice or would just think it was some new way of wearing hair.

Sorry to jump on your thread Op (I wouldn't look twice by the way), but what is it about Liverpool and the effort those women put into their looks?!

Can confirm from a weekend trip up there that loads and loads of young girls and older ladies were indeed walking around with rollers in and overall clearly spent a lot of time on their appearance

Are Northers generally more looks conscious? They were definitely nicer anyway, loads of people I've never seen in my life saying hello Grin I felt really welcome

Liverpool women are the most polished, co ordinated and stylish women Ive ever seen. Walk around the business district on lunch hour... they look unreal. Nights out... perfection

sadienurse2 · 26/04/2023 18:42

I do my weekly shop in the 'rough' shopping centre in my city and lots of women have rollers in on a Saturday morning. They are well dressed and have a full face of make up, so nothing slovenly about them, but I do inwardly judge a bit Blush

RosaBonheur · 26/04/2023 19:39

I see everybody has ready beaten me to it re Liverpool.

CatticusFinch · 26/04/2023 19:45

Clothes and appearance is definitely a big thing in Liverpool traditionally. People just make an effort and manage to coordinate wonderfully! A lot of people also make an effort with their houses, clean their front step etc. You might not have a lot but what you do have is kept looking good. And yes, the most friendly people in the world - you can always strike up a conversation anywhere with anyone in Liverpool.

I use a roller like that overnight, wear it to 6am spin, then shower - body -dressed, makeup and then roller out! Hair looks superb

Doesn't your hair get all sweaty and gross during spin??

I once flew out of Liverpool airport on New Year's Eve and I was about the only Woman without rollers in. I was the slovenly one Grin

I don't live in the north any more but wouldn't bat an eyelid OP.

I was going to say the same about Liverpool. I flew out of Liverpool recently and loads of women were wearing rollers. Same in Blackpool, go to the shops on a Saturday afternoon and you will spot a few women with rollers in.

Spanielsarepainless · 26/04/2023 20:24

I had a mental image of Hilda Ogden from Coronation Street, or Nora Batty from Last of the Summer Wine!

VivaciousRadish · 26/04/2023 20:46

I wouldn’t know it was anything to do with curling, it just looks like a cute quirky hairstyle to me.

I'm also from the south east like the previous poster who said it looked slovenly, but I’m not a judgy twat. You’d look fine. Me - with the same messy bun I’ve worn for 15 years, possibly not so much (maybe even slovenly!)

Have a lovely night out

I would come and ask you how you had made one of these things work as I cannot for the life of me manage it!

You need damp hair for it.
part hair at the back into two pig tails.
pin it on the top of your head like an Alice band.
roll sections around it, but like a plait
use the two scrunchies to secure.
go to sleep in it and you should have waves / curls

quite like mine 🥳

I live in an affluent area of the south east and would raise an eyebrow. It looks slovenly to me, but I know in the North it's really normal so it depends where you live.

Really?? I think you are quite unusual if so.

If you can actually get that technique to work OP post a picture..

This is true, I've had a couple of awesome nights out in Liverpool. The people are so nice.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/04/2023 21:03

I wouldn't bat an eye. I live in a student town. Anything goes!

Snooty much?

ReadersD1gest · 26/04/2023 21:07

That's not rollers, is it? Rollers suggests a head full of little plastic tubes!

Same, its mostly pins now not rollers. Once I flew to marbella in rollers..maybe about 7 years ago.

My3cents1 · 26/04/2023 21:15

@Zurala By affluent area of the south East, do you mean up your own backside?
Just because you reside in an affluent area certainly does not mean you have class, clearly.

nervousfirsttimer1985 · 26/04/2023 21:17

I would think it is fine, although I would usually just sleep in mine. That type of styler can be twisted back too. I have one of these and get amazing curls when I use it. I am also usually useless at doing my hair too, but can manage this.
I have also been on a train with pin curls in and not sure if anyone batted an eyelid.

wednesdayrobyn · 26/04/2023 21:28

To be honest I probably wouldn't even notice. Massive rollers maybe but something like the picture no. Even if I did I'd probably judge for about a second before realising I'm actually just jealous as I never get glammed up these days.

Inthemiddleofthenightdu · 26/04/2023 21:34

Pretty common in some areas like Essex and Kent as well as Liverpool. When I've been to those counties I've often seen young women in shopping centres on a Saturday ahead of a night out.

I think it's because in places like London the style is quite casual and Londoners prefer pubs to clubs and trainers to heels. Whereas places like Essex and Liverpool it's very much the Instagram/Towie dolled-up look for nights out.

zurala · 26/04/2023 21:48

Bloody hell everyone calm down! I only mentioned where I live as context. I have never seen anyone walk around with curlers in, it's definitely not the done thing round here. But, factually, it is a northern thing, I remember reading about it some years ago. So, as I said, it depends on where op lives.

GhostWorld · 27/04/2023 13:26

Should have said, I'll be sleeping with it in tonight, just don't want to free the curls too early tomorrow in the wind and probably rain. Also didn't mean to mislead re the word curlers, just didn't know what else to call it.

I was thinking about it overnight and I think I'll try find some nicer material to wrap it up in, my dressing gown cord is very dressing gown like.

If you're in the park tomorrow in the South West and you see someone with this in looking awkward, you may have spotted me!
