Disney World Florida - stroller??

Rosebud1302 · 26/04/2023 08:36

I just want to preface this by saying this would very much be a one off and my son has not been in a pushchair in our home country for years now. So as to keep things in perspective!

We are looking at going to Disney World in Florida next year. My son will be 5. I have been very fortunate to have been a number of times (child free) so I know it can be tiring and of course hot depending on the time of year. I am debating whether or not to hire a stroller when out there for my son. I won't deny I don't want to get looks or be judged but also I wonder if having a stroller for him to hop into when he gets too hot or tired may just make all of our lives easier and less stressful.

Does anyone have experience of taking this age child there? Bearing in mind we are from the UK so definitely not used to the temperatures it can reach!

Thanks :)

I remember going when mine where4,6 and 8. We hired a stroller and there were fights at times as to who got to go in it! It was so useful so I would say go for it.

Yes we went when ds2 was 5 ….i think, may have to check he could have been 4

we took a stroller that I’d saved for the trip, he was in reception at school so we didn’t use the buggy anymore (which leads me to believe he was 4 now I’ve said that)

it was definitely the best thing for us…..apart from dh getting into a debate with an armed guard about whether he should go through the bag check

he thought he was going to get shot at one point….livened the day up I can tell you

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 26/04/2023 09:37

Oops

would also agree that it was useful for my slightly older children as well

there is only 17 months between dd and ds2 and she probably used it as much as him

I would take one without hesitation and you’ll see plenty of kids the same age and older in them. The heat, plus long days, excitement/over tiredness, lots of walking even to and from transport services….you’d be daft not to.

Patty101 · 26/04/2023 09:43

I would definitely take one. Also, very handy for carrying bags when your son isn't using it.

We recently used a pushchair for our 2 year old on holiday, and it worked out really well because when he was refusing to sit in it, adamant that he wanted to walk, our 5 year old hopped in and got to rest his legs for a bit.

Darthwazette · 26/04/2023 09:44

Yes, I’d have got in one myself at time if I could have!

Rosebud1302 · 26/04/2023 12:45

Thank you everyone! You have confirmed what I was thinking. I may get DP to push me around too 🤣🤣.

Ok so my next question. Did you bring one with you from home, if so which one if it worked well (obviously he will be bigger than a 1/2 year old so thinking mainly from a size/comfort point of view and also carrying bags). Or did you rent one out there and again who with?

Thank you!

I actually bought a cheap stroller at a supermarket out there, the hire worked out quite expensive if you wanted it every day.

Scalessayeek · 26/04/2023 22:05

We didn’t buy one for just over 4 year old but ended up buying one from target. It was $70 and cheaper than renting. We brought it home for my youngest (who was 4 months at the time). It’s good to store clothes/snacks/drinks too :)

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 26/04/2023 22:06

100% use a stroller. We go every year and last summer when our youngest was 7 is the first time we haven’t used a stroller (and in fact for 2 days we did still hire one from Disney) It is hot and very tiring. You will see a lot of older children in pushchairs there. As the children got older we stopped taking one with us and either hired one there from Kingdom strollers, or bought one from Walmart. You will not regret it for a second.

mnahmnah · 26/04/2023 22:12

We went with our DS last summer when he was 5. He walked all day and night every day. Got a little grouchy. But he slept well and definitely would not have gone in a buggy! He refused aged 2!

Rosebud1302 · 26/04/2023 22:31

@mnahmnah your little one sounds like he has more energy than I do that's for sure! 😁. Sounds like he did amazingly well!

Thank you so far for everyone's suggestions. Has anyone used the company Scooter Bug when renting?

I'm going against the grain a bit as I took my children when they were 5 and 3 and didn't have a pushchair for either of them. I thought it would be too difficult to cope single-handed at the airport carrying luggage and pushing a pushchair and I was too stingy to hire one at Disney World!

The 5 year old was absolutely fine but the 3 year old did get a bit tired. She managed, but in retrospect she would have been better off in a pushchair.

MiningForYou · 26/04/2023 22:46

Renting is so expensive, you can click and collect one at target or Walmart and donate it when you leave

mnahmnah · 26/04/2023 22:50

@Rosebud1302

Energy is his middle name! Useful in circumstances like this, hard work the rest of the time! But I appreciate others at that age may not cope so well. I was just saying it’s possible without a buggy

HanSB · 26/04/2023 22:54

Yes it’s pretty normal at Disney to see older kids up to around 8 years old in the park strollers. If you are hiring one from somewhere else I would just check the weight limit on it. It’s useful for the huge distances and heat as well as a very long day when you are battling jet lag! We were at the parks from 9am till 10pm some days with fireworks shows, handy for a little nap if needed to avoid a meltdown from overstimulation

lifehappens12 · 27/04/2023 09:38

We just got back and hired a stroller locally called a 'bob'. We had a double for a 2 and 5 year old to share and it was huge but comfortable enough for the 5 year old to sleep him.

Chatting to the lady who collected on last day - she said she has children up to 7 being pushed around in these. My 9 year old was able to sit and rest in it too.

Was useful to hire out there as we didn't have to fit in in the car from the airport.

Rosebud1302 · 27/04/2023 11:03

Thanks everyone! Picking one up from Target or Walmart unfortunately won't really be possible as we aren't hiring a car so it will be hard to get there. Would be nice to save a few pennies! Sounds like the strollers are a good enough size for him too (he's a relatively small child to be fair and doesn't weigh much either). I just think it may be worth it despite having to push it around. It's such an expensive holiday the last thing I need is a grumpy 5 year old for half of it because he's tired!!!

Honestly, I wouldn't be setting foot in Florida now that Desantis has passed that new Bill a week ago. People are cancelling their trips in their droves because of it. Besides the rest of the lunacy in the horrendous new law, the most concerning thing, is the fact that a Doctor can refuse to treat you even in an emergency situation, if you're either gay, a different race, a different religion to them or from a foreign country! It's terrifying

teaandlotusbiscoff · 22/05/2023 10:27

At that age we took an umbrella fold stroller. Absolutely invaluable! We brought ours from home as we still had a Joie nitro and then took it on the plane for free
