Breast cancer - mastectomy on other breast after 10 years?

Just saw a oncologist today who is recommending another mastectomy on my remaining boob. He wants to do it in july. Apparently its day surgery. I'm okish with it. Apparently my chances of it recurring in the next 5/10 years is 95%. Anyone else had it done?

I wish mine would offer it. I'm fed up with one huge boob and nothing on the other side.

I hated living with one boob. It drove me up the wall so I went back after a year and they removed the other.
I don't wear prostheses and live very comfortably flat. My only problem is hypertrophic scarring on one side.

Living flat is so much better than being one-sided with prostheses. No bras!
I had my 2nd mastectomy after 15 years because of a diagnosis of DCIS but I was adamant that I would only consider a MX . They agreed and I never even think about it in my daily life.

I had both mine done at the same time - I just wanted them gone! I was told some
stats about reoccurrence and I didn’t want to have to have mammograms every year and the worry/stress. I did have implants put in though.

Why is he recommending this now after 10 years?

Boxshibe · 25/04/2023 18:10

Positives
I'm thinking when I'm only off camera at work I could be bra/ boobie free .
I an also chose what size I want to be up to a D and get a tummy tuck at the same time.
Negative
It's my boob.
It's day surgery which scares me I'd prefer to stay overnight.

If you're considering reconstruction you're looking at a massive op and recovery with several tweaking surgeries to follow. (I wouldn't even consider it.)

If your oncologist has suggested a mastectomy I'd go for it without hesitation.
Honestly day surgery is nothing to worry about. They won't discharge you if there's a problem.
Have you got a breast cancer nurse you can discuss things with?

No was thinking of calling macmillian to talk to them.

Don't mind about reconstruction I'm only in my 40s.

Watch tonight's Naked Education on Ch4. Women that have had mastectomies and recon and living flat.

I had mastectomy on one side and was not too bad for surgery and after but hate living with it 1 sided. And wait for reconstruction is really long - op was Dec 21 and not even been put on waiting list yet (Apr 23) and been told its 42 weeks once on it. Got quote for private £25k. I have heard positive things about DIEP but they said its a week in hospital and 3 months recovery though my recovery on 1st one was much quicker than they said. At those odds would go for it or at least get second opinion.

If an oncology recommended it then I would just do it. I have one boob, it doesn’t bother me much being lop sided, my remaining boob is small (32b). I get frustrated at not being able to wear certain tops or dresses, but the thought of the bigger surgery of reconstruction and potential complications put me right off.
