Slipped on stairs with baby in arms

Hi all. I don’t really know why I’m starting this thread. A little while ago I was walking down the stairs with my one year old on my hip and I slipped about 4 steps from the bottom. I fell back and whacked my back and arm off the stairs but managed to keep holding the baby. Baby only got a bump through me if you know what I mean, but shrieked loudly with fright.
I couldn’t stop crying. We checked baby carefully and kept a careful eye, she was flying around the place in great form afterwards so not worried there, however I genuinely feel like I’m in shock. My muscles are all sore. I think it was one of the worst frights I ever got in my life 😢😢

I did this and can still remember the shock! Well done for being so on the ball, no harm done.

Wfhandbored · 24/04/2023 20:35

You did amazing! Don't beat yourself up, sounds like you're sore enough already

SeeSawSeen · 24/04/2023 20:38

Oh gosh, so sorry you had this happen. It is genuinely a nightmare scenario, I know I imagine it happening every time I carry my little one up and down the stairs every day. You protected your baby - be proud of that once the inital shock fades. Hope you feel much better and less sore soon🌷

I did that once. The baby was laughing when we bounced to the bottom because he thought it was so fun 🤩

My arse was black and blue the next day!

ImAGoodPerson · 24/04/2023 20:51

Yes I did this too, my 2 yo was in front of me, very tiny baby in my arms, I managed to kick my 2 yo down the stairs and my arm slipped through the bannister so I ended up very bruised. Managed to keep hold of the baby and both kids were fine.

It's horrible as you think about it so much.

I did this holding just turned 1yo DS from the third step at the top to the bottom. I got the shock of my life and my only thought was to grip DS tightly while breaking the fall by still holding the handrail and bumping all the way to the bottom.

DS was absolutely fine but I was bruised badly and had nerve pain for several years from my arm being repeatedly yanked all the all down the stairs. I had been wearing bed socks so they went in the bin and I’ll never wear them again.

Aww bless!

I did this with DS4 but he was only about a week old. I had big stupid slippers on.

I went right from the top to the bottom on my back. I just held onto him with both arms and so couldn't stop myself. I was winded and badly bruised. He was fine!

The worst thing was my older (but still all under 10) kids screaming in fear as they saw the whole thing.

DS was fine. I binned the slippers!

I fell down 3 garden steps while holding my then 18 month old son. Broke my ankle in 2 places and he got a bump on the head. 10 years later and I still feel terrible about it but accidents happen.

GinBlossom94 · 24/04/2023 21:24

I also did this, witnessed by my eldest who still likes to say I threw youngest down the stairs 🤦🏻‍♀️

Flittingaboutagain · 24/04/2023 21:26

I'm glad you're both not seriously hurt! How horrible. Just keep repeating I'm okay she's okay. Most of us have been there at some point!

vipersnest1 · 24/04/2023 21:26

So your baby is fine - you're the one that took the brunt! It's instinct to save them from any damage if you can, but that means you are probably more hurt than you would be if you weren't carrying her, so make sure to check yourself out properly and take painkillers / anti-inflammatories and use ice and heat as needed.
It happens to all of us, one way or another.

Newusernameaug · 24/04/2023 21:29

I did this with my baby when he was just a few months old, only I was holding him up to my shoulder so he went down head first and we spent the night in A&E, it was awful and still scares me 19 years later!

Thanks for all your messages of support everyone! I am doing better Thank God. I took the day off work yesterday as I was very sore. Currently waiting in the waiting room to see a GP to check out my back and get a cert for the rest of the week. My job involves a lot of bending and kneeling etc and I don’t feel able for it! My back, arm and leg are all bruised but thankfully baby is absolutely perfect!!!
