Was this a terrible or reasonable?

I went to watch the London Marathon yesterday. I went with a group because we know several people running.

We got there very early to get our spots on the barrier.

Watching, especially if you have people you want to see is actually really tiring work. It's a long day on your feet and you have to concentrate hard to be able to see people, which is much harder if you're not on the barrier. It's worth it to support the runners, but I find it's actually easier to run!

Anyway we'd been there for about 4 hours, race is in full flow, we've seen one of our friends go past and are expecting the next two any time. A family arrived with two children maybe 7 & 9 and were most perturbed that no one was prepared to give up their spot so the children could go to the front. It wasn't just our party, no one was moving...

CFs.

I watched it on TV and was surprised by how many long gaps there were in the lines of spectators on the sides. I suppose some locations must be difficult to reach but it seems odd they couldn't have found a better spot somewhere else.

Yes, we'd got there early because we wanted a particular spot in Central London but last year we were at mile 17 in Docklands and had plenty of space.

It seems reasonable to me that if you're going to take children to such an event, you'd do a bit of research first, there are plenty of guides for spectators.

Yes, and they could probably have found out online where the best places were to go on the day itself.
