How many pairs of uniform does your child go through per year?

??

2 jumpers, 2 pinafores have already gone scruffy. Thank god for summer dresses and a skirt.

Already gone through 5 pairs of tights that have gone bobbly or ripped.

This is for my dd who is in year one.

Polo shirts are fine.

Already worn out one pair of shoes since September.

I tend to buy 5 at the beginning of the year, then if it’s taking ages for the washing to dry I’ve enough for a full week.

I appreciate this is a fortunate position to be in and not everyone can do this

LBOCS2 · 24/04/2023 15:36

We buy enough to only do laundry once a week. So, as our DC go in in their PE kit on PE days, it's 2x PE shirts, 2x pairs leggings, 3x pinafores, 3x shirts. They have 1 PE jumper and 2x uniform jumpers each.

DD2 has grown out of her formal uniform, so I've just moved her into summer dresses (3x each of those). Between two them they've lost 3 (or possibly 4?) school jumpers, so I did a restock over Easter. They wear socks and I just bulk buy them, and I'm about to buy DD2 her third set of school shoes this year 🤷🏼‍♀️

They grow, they get scruffy, things get lost. This is probably the worst year we've had of it but none of what's happened really surprises me.

toomuchlaundry · 24/04/2023 15:41

Tried to make things last as long as possible, so didn't subscribe to new uniform at the beginning of each year, so replaced when needed. I always found school shoes were the worst and fell apart long before grown out of.

DS used to wrap his feet round chair leg, on the first day of wearing new pair of shoes he managed to rest the chair leg on top of one of his shoes, never did get the dent out of it, I was not impressed

At primary mine always had 3 jumpers/cardis, 5 tops, 4 trousers/skirts, 4 summer dresses/shorts and 1 pe kit. (Summer uniform normally lasted 2 years)
At secondary we have 5 jumpers, 8 t-shirts, 5 trousers and 1 rugby/football shirt, 2 pe tops, 2 shorts and 1 pe joggers, footballboots and trainers. We have to order secondary uniform so I only do this once a year

Skybluepinky · 24/04/2023 15:48

Always bought M&S (when on special normally a 1/3 off) 5 bottoms and 6 tops and they changed them every day, they looked brand new by the end of the year.
Friends bought their kids supermarket uniforms and within a month or two looked like they were second hand.

WhiteFire · 24/04/2023 15:53

They last until they no longer fit, hence I have just had to buy new trousers for DD solely for the next twelve weeks. She can't wear them in September as she needs black and is currently grey.

whoruntheworldgirls · 24/04/2023 15:57

We buy new uniform every summer ready for September, that's usually 2 tshirts, 4 gingham dresses, 1 grey pinafore, 5 long sleeve tops, that will last her the whole school year, as will the tights and socks.
Cardigans from the school shop are on the large side so last her 2 years. Shoe's she'll usually have 2 pairs a school year

Corkcobain · 24/04/2023 15:59

DS started reception in September. We're on the second pair of shoes (first were fine condition but outgrown)
we had 4 pairs of trousers which are all fine still, 2 summer shorts which he hasn't worn yet due to weather.
4 jumpers (2 official uniform which have gone a bit bobbly, 2 just plain which are still fine but are starting to look a bit small)
1 set of pe kit which is fine and is kept at school each term
5 polo shirts which are grey, stained and a bit short now so fit for the bin - I've just had to buy 5 more.
He's also on his second pair of wellies and waterproofs that they need for forest school and his second school coat.

It's an expense I could do without to be honest but it's needed so we have no choice.

boobot1 · 24/04/2023 16:01

I buy 5 of everything, but always end up buying a dozen or more polo shirts over the year as they go grey too quickly. Socks, I must buy thousands,I have no idea where they go. Usually go through three coats and three pairs of school shoes too.

Dodgeitornot · 24/04/2023 16:03

Normally it was 2 pairs of shoes a year and uniform until she grew out of it which was normally once per year after summer holidays. It never really fell apart or got that grubby. She's had the same blazer since Y7 and she's now Y10.

Lkgcsr · 24/04/2023 16:04

Year 1 child; we’re on second pair of school shoes, maybe ripped one pair of tights and t shirts would have needed replacing due to stains if we hadn’t moved to summer dresses. Cardigans and skirts are fine and some were from reception but the skirts are quite expensive

wingingit1987 · 24/04/2023 16:06

I have one son whose uniforms still look pristine come the end of June. And one son whose knees are burst out of his trousers and polo shirts stained beyond use come the October mid term. I buy 5 of Each item for the new school year starting and then another few items the next size up for us to use later in the year.

FraterculaArctica · 24/04/2023 16:06

My DC (3x primary age) have 3 jumpers, 3 polo shirts (ours are a dark colour so don't go grey), 4 trousers/pinafores, plus summer dresses/shorts. I always buy second hand, including shoes, and replace uniform when they outgrow or it gets holey. I don't understand why people feel the need to buy new every September.

riotlady · 24/04/2023 16:12

DD started reception in September. Started with 4 cardigans, have since bought another 2 as despite being labelled they keep disappearing into the aether
6 polo shirts, all ok if not as white as they once were
Tights all went rubbish so replaced with 4 pairs of black leggings
Bought 4 pinafores, weirdly has outgrown one but the others are fine- not sure if I shrank that one in the wash or if it was less forgiving to begin with!
shoes still ok
PE tops stained and need replacing as they wear them all day on PE day and she’s dropped something tomatoey down both

WolfFoxHare · 24/04/2023 16:17

I buy four pairs of trousers, four sweaters, 6 polo shirts, 2 PE t shirts at the start of the year. He wears PE kit two days a week for school sports. They usually last all year, the polo shirts sometimes 18 months if I get big enough ones.

DelurkingAJ · 24/04/2023 16:18

I accept that polo shirts get stained and unless it’s embarrassingly so (and that means massive food stains not whiteboard marker stains) then they carry through the year. Occasionally one of the DSs goes through trousers at the knee (PE joggers much more frequently) otherwise DS1’s uniform (apart from polo shirts) has been worn by DS2 and passed on to friends or the school very happily take stuff for spares. It’s nearly all from ASDA (hurray for long length trousers).

Each DS has two sets of PE kit and three sets of uniform (unless like polos they come in packs of five). They don’t change for PE days.

Shoes, they each grow about a size and a half a year and I try not to think about the cost. They don’t pass shoes on (although I keep them for spares in case DS2 gets waterlogged!).

DelurkingAJ · 24/04/2023 16:19

@riotlady apologies if this is obvious but for tomato stains wait for bright sunshine, wash the PE shirts and dry outside. The stains vanish. It’s amazing!

LadyDanburysHat · 24/04/2023 16:20

Bobbly tights and scruffy pinafores and jumpers wouldn't be a reason to stop using them for school for me. They just get worn by the end of the year. However my DC when younger were like most others and had multiples of everything. We probably had 3 jumpers, 4 trousers/skirts when early primary. As they get older I find they wear them out less and you can get away with less. But school sweatshirts have done 3 kids, they may look faded but they still do the job.

Wanttoshavemyhairoff · 24/04/2023 16:24

DD1 started with two kilts, 2 jumpers , 4 shirts , 2 tracksuits and 3 polo shirts .
All still going strong

DD2 wears school tracksuit for first two years of school .
She started in September with 5 full tracksuits , 5 polo shirts
She now has three pairs of tracksuit bottoms , 2 jumpers 😭 and 5 polo shirts
All their uniform is crested so is expensive to replace .
She lost it all in school / clubs and got paint on one jumper which won’t come out.
Ive just given in and ordered another school tracksuit, it’s a pain because they take so long to dry , I really need 5 sets !
Unfortunately she only gets a day out of them as she plays in the school field after school

DyslexicPoster · 24/04/2023 16:25

All my kids had 5-7 of everything and they normally last more than 12 months. Dd is still wearing skirts age 6 and she is 8. I have more than 2 kids so dispite washing daily I need the buffer of clean clothes for the week. A fair bit is also second hand. I guess as some things are only worn once a week it lasts better but like I say, it's just what ever makes my life easier. We are not well off buy any means. I have two kids currently in second hand school shoes. Obvs they don't have more than one pair of shoes

FlounderingFruitcake · 24/04/2023 16:36

DD is Y1 and is still in summer dresses and cardigans from school nursery, we went a size up though as her true to size was out of stock at the time. The pinafores and blouses were bought reception year. Sports kit bottoms were replaced this year but the jumpers and polo from reception are still fine. I’ve just replaced all shoes as her feet grew, they were bought this time last year and a swimsuit that lost it’s shape which is a school regulation one and unfortunately shit quality. Tights are always new every year as I find they stretch out and get bobbly but everything else I would expect to last much long unless you get hit with a mega growth spurt.

Puffthemagiclizard · 24/04/2023 16:58

We've got tonnes! About 6 or 7 polo shirts each, 5 or 6 trousers / skirts each, and the same with jumpers. They are so inexpensive compared to everyday clothes, and anything that survives to be outgrown gets given to the school swap shop.

This! Same with shoes- always bought Clarks and lasted the schools year.

DyslexicPoster · 24/04/2023 17:24

I get a lot of uniform from Asda as it tends to fit and last well, but I agree, the M&S things generally are good quality. Esp the stain proof polos. I also buy non branded things that should be branded. So maybe two branded tops and three non branded. My son is on his third year in his Asda polo shirts but they bottle green. A bit faded but no wear to them what so ever.

lljkk · 24/04/2023 17:44

I don't mind scruffy so it lasts until it has holes in it/ falls apart.
