Day trips from London for adults

We live in East London. I'm after some ideas for day trips for two adults who like walking, food, shopping, the odd gallery or museum visit. Cool, interesting or cute towns / villages to mooch around would be great, also very much up for coastal walks Nothing kid friendly. Max one hours drive or about 90 mins on train outside of London

Thanks!

This sort of thing is very up my alley!

Recent ones I’ve enjoyed:

Canterbury / Whitstable
We actually stayed overnight in Canterbury but you could do either in a day
There is a very easy bus between the two

Canterbury - didn’t know much about it but it’s lovely!
Medieval city, worth doing a walking tour, beautiful river walk, good pubs / cafes / bookshops

Whitstable
On the coast, nice coast walk either way out of town, great restaurants

New Forest
Might be slightly longer train than you’re looking for but you can get a train right into the heart of the New Forest at Brockenhurst and then go straight into lovey walks

Eastbourne
Lush walk along cliffs

Rye / Camber Sands
Train to Rye, pleasant hour walk to Camber Sands or you can get a bus
Rye is cute old town, good food places and nice shops
Camber Sands long beautiful beach walk

Rye is great. You need to change trains at Ashford but it's a lovely adult day out. You can visit Henry James's house which is the most adult thing ever. The Mermaid is great for lunch.
Canterbury also an excellent shout.
Oxford and Cambridge obviously.

Chatham Dockyard is worth a look - may or not be your thing but it's a fascinating day out with or without children.

'Oxford and Cambridge obviously.'

Have been to both, but a few years ago now and they're definitely on the list for a return visit!
